Unhappy Re: Pain on one side of throat

My 11 year old has the same thing. He started with a slight sore throat and "tickle" cough. then he got a fever 101.8 was the highest, the doctor did a strep test and it was negative, she sent us home with no meds and said it was a virus. That was tuesday, by thursday he had refused to eat and drink, very little liquids by force only. So i looked down his mouth into his throat and it was red and white sores on the back of his throat. We went back and the doctor gave him penicillin and a "magic" mouth swish and swallow numbing solution. That was Thursday, here we are Monday and now his throat only hurts on one side and now it is giving him ear pain in that ear. I have been with him, sharing drinks and kisses and he has been in face for a week now and i have not gotten sick. We also live in Florida, central west coast.

Hi, not sure if you figured this out already or not, but the "smelly, white" "tonsil ball" things you were talking about are what is causing all of your problems. I suffered from the exact same thing. At first, it started out as just pain in the back of my throat, then progressed to enlarged tonsils, & constantly feeling like something was in the back of my throat. I also experienced the burning sensations in my ears others have mentioned, especially when drinking fluids. Eventually, I too noticed the smelly white things, which I later found out (with no help from my doctors), were actually called tonsiliths, or tonsil stones. What they are is buildups of mucous around particles of food, or bateria, that get caught in your tonsils. This happens to people like me who have small holes, or crypts, in their tonsils. The stones develop in the crevices of your tonsils, get smelly when mucous builds around them, and after a lot of them build up they cause your tonsils to swell up & be painful. After time, if your holes/crypts are large enough, the stones will begin to pop out of your tonsils. Sometimes you just swallow them without noticing, or sometimes you cough them up, etc. Mine would build up & just be stuck back there. I know it sounds gross, but I used to pick mine out of the back of my throat with a pair of tweezers; which I know is probably a bad idea, but they were so gross I couldn't stand them back there. Not only are they painful, but they cause bad breath. In the end, my solution was to have my tonsils removed, which as an adult is an extremely painful process, I must admit. However, in the end, to me it was well worth it since the tonsil stones were driving me insane! If surgery is not for you, I have heard that water picks, like the ones used by dental hygeniests, can be used to force some of the stones out. But in the end, the problem will not go away completely until you just have your tonsils taken out. Sorry for the bad news, but to me, it was well worth it.
    Hope this helps!

I may have something similar. I am a 23 Female from San Francisco. For about 2 months, I've had an uncomfortable feeling in the right side of my throat. My mother was thought to have cancer and had her thyroid removed, and I have 2 nodules in my thyroid so i thoughtn it was that. However the thyroid is under/around the adams apple, and my problem in higher, in front on the right only. The right side of my neck is bigger than the left (i've had many doctors confirm this as a regular thing for me) and the lymph nodes on the rigt side are more numeroud than large (i usually get swollen nodes when I'm sick). I've also has slight discomfort in my right ear. Neither the neck or ear cause me pain, more discomfort and worry. I have no pain when swallowing or talking. Over the last 2 months, I've sneezed a litle and gotten a couple other sinus pains like eyes and headaches but nothing really big. I have a doctors appointment Dec 28th where if he cant decide its a sinus problem etc, I will have him refer me to an Endochronologist (hormone specialist which included thyroid) where i will have an ultrasound. i must say though, I am releived to hear so many people having these symptoms with no real problems (or so the docs say). Perhaps it is just a sinus infection affecting only the right side of neck and ear.

Exclamation Re: Pain on one side of throat

Wow! I am not the only one afterall.

I know this is an old thread but I am hoping there will be late-lurkers who have answers and can help me.

Left-sided pain in throat for almost two and a half months now. Geez. I get real nauseas and vomit a lot too. Also headaches and jaw pain. Achey calves too ....it's a wierd symptom with the leg cramps that comes and goes. One day I feel like I am getting well ...the next I am weak and tired. Feels like I have a virus or a chronic form of strep, but like others here i have had strep test plus blood work and all negative results.

Can you have a false negative strep test?

No, I do not have acid reflux.

I do have nausea though and the soreness in my throat gets better and then worse at times. Worse more in the morings after I wake up or when the throat is "dry". Hurts when I drink cold liquids but feels better with hot liquids. It really feels like a virus or infection, but no fevers.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,

Been dealing with something sharing many of the same symptoms for about a year now & I am now disabled & have 5 docs & a team of specialists working to get me well.I have an enlarged lump on left side of throat....it is one of my salivary glands..working to figure y it is inflamed.also, have had the ear pain, too.Biggest symptom has been terrible sore throat & painful swallowing/talking...which is why i am on disability....I work for a call center & it has gotten to the point where i cant speak & I am on pain meds just to deal every day.AFter going thru this for so long I have read A LOT & learned a lot!!!! Two big things:listen to your body..if you know that something is wrong..you aren't crazy.DOn't let some lazy doctor decide you are fine if you don't feel fine...get a second or 3rd or more opinions. If you don't have your health...you have nothing, believe me. I have asthma & usually have upper respiratory infections every year..so last year..we kept thinking that is what was going on & i kept getting treated with antibiotics....kept getting worse.
By August of last year the pain was unbearable....went to ent & had scopes,ct scans,& got on acide reflux meds for severe reflux...but i never really had heartburn. However,my symptoms are always worst in morning.A month went by no major improvement & unbearable pain..went to gastroentereologist.....got more meds ...still worse....got endoscopy in november & they found candida esophagitis.....a yeast infection in my esophagus from all the antibiotics. This usually only occurs in people that have a lowered immune function & is quite common in people with hiv & some other diseases. They did blood tests & ruled out hiv, diabetes, thyroid, lupus, major blood infection & ton more issues. They put me on antifungal meds..no huge changes but a little improvement.by the middle of november the pain was too great & i could no longer work.I was having an easier time with hot/warm liquids...soups,teas,ice cream also soothes & honey with tea. & i used any over the counter numbing cough drop you ever heard of & changed my diet...still in pain! Now I have recently gotten a new ent & a whole team of specialists on ent & swallowing issues..so we will see. I even went to an infectious disease specialist..he referred me to the team.
Not to scare any of you,but here are some things that can cause the throat pain & some of the other issues I read you all were having: cancer of the larynx/pharnyx,candidiasis,goiter,gerd,sjogrens syndrome...just to name a few. Mayo clinic.com is a wealth of info...also,probiotics help regulate the good bacteria in your body & you can get the right kind at a health food store...dont buy that **** at kmart..no good. I am no doctor, but I am trying to help someone else..like I wish someone would have helped me a year ago.I am now out of work on disability & have a ton of med expenses, have to fight the insurance company & get poked & prodded all the time....it is a horrible qual of life, take care of yourselves.I am only 30 & I have 2 kids...you dont want this...read up,ask ?'s.hope this helps.

Unhappy Re: Pain on one side of throat

I've been dealing with pain on the left side of my throat for about 8 months now. It definitely gets worse at night, but it's pretty much always there, and sometimes my left ear hurts, too. I've been to several doctors, had strep tests, a scope put down my throat by a ENT specialist, and taken antibiotics, all with no results. The latest, from the ENT doctor, was possible acid reflux, so I took Prilosec for a couple of weeks, with no results. I have a follow-up appointment with the ENT this week and hope for some answers. A friend suggested it might be candida related, as I also have very frequent urinary tract infections.

Does anyone else get UTI's with the one-sided sore throat?
