tingly, heavy arms
Well here goes...about 6 months ago I began to have a numb tingly feeling in my arms, sometimes only on one side, othertimes on both. I got checked for pretty much every neurological problem it could be (MRIs, bloodwork, etc) and nothing was found wrong. It eventually went away for a few months, and now is back. I notice also that it is worse when I drink alcohol, and at night. It's like I can feel something moving around in my arm the more I drink. I also am now experiencing a tightness in my chest that occurs also at night, and with no reason. I got freaked out last week and went to urgent care. Blood pressure was normal, heart rate fine, EKG and bloodwork all normal. They basically told me I was probably having a panic attack. I don't feel anxious/nervous until this happens though! It always happens when I am trying to relax and have a good time. When I am busy I guess I don't notice it. I am 5'5, 108 lbs...kinda thin I guess but still healthy by the numbers. I am always cold and have a severe intolerance to it. Could this be a circulatory issue and what would I even do about getting a test for that?? Thanks...I don't want to be put on antidepressants for this!!!! Help please.

Re: tingly, heavy arms
This also happens to me, mostly when I try to sleep, I found out it was due to back problems, I have a twisted spine and 2 vertabrae in my neck that
have calcium deposits which put pressure on the discs and nerves, my muscles in my back are very tight due to repetitive heavy lifting for 30 years
I am 44 and I have been in the restaurant and bar business for this long...
I also packed mules and horses in the back country. Physical Therapy 3 times per week, stretching, chiropractic adjustments and massage I have been very helpful. I may need surgery in my later years hopefully not if I take care now!!! Hope this helps

Re: tingly, heavy arms
With you always being cold, I would say its your thyroid or because you are too think for your for your height. Thyroid can aslo cause some of your other problems.
Lyme disease can also cause alot of what you are dealing with. And dosen't show up in tests. Must be tested special.
Sure know what you mean abt not wanting the doc cure all for everything, antidepressant. Hope you feel better soon.

Re: tingly, heavy arms
What you are having sounds like a classic panic attack. I know because I have them, too. You don't have to feel nervous before having one; that's now how it works. First, you may feel like something is a little off with your body: a twinge of pain, something feeling uncomfortable, or a feeling of impending doom washing over you. Then, you become hyper-aware of your body, which brings on the anxiety. The first time it happened to me, I called EMS and was taken to the ER. I got the same results as you: normal "Basic Metabolic Panel" and normal ECG. When I realized what it was, the episodes went down in frequency, but I have noticed that they affect me more at night and when I drink.
As for medications, you don't have to be on anti-depressants if you don't want to (for SSRI's, they can take up to four weeks to start working, and have anxiety as one of their initial side effects). You could take a benzodiazepine, like Xanax or Ativan to treat panic attacks more acutely. I am currently on both.
I know this was posted a while ago, but I hope that you are doing better, and know that you can get through it!

Re: tingly, heavy armshwarwk
I am also having the same symptoms, it feels like my veins are going to explode from pressure, especially in my arms, and my heart hurts. They can't find anything wrong. My head also throbs, it feels like a watermelon ready to explode. This is frustrating for me because I am normally a healthy person. Also if I have a glass of wine my face turns bright red. I only drink occasionally. Anyone having the same symptoms?

Re: tingly, heavy arms
I know what you mean. I had to quit taking wine for communion; would always turn my face blood red. I just quit altogether, but if you can find organic wine, it did not do that to me. I also get the tingling arm, particularly when walking and the arms are dangling. They swell, too. When I had chest pain, it was attributed to the esophagus.....reflux disease......another reason I quit the wine. I'm currently having a major issue with severe leg cramping, too. This is new symptom, but it's been unending pain for 7 days. I had it about a month ago for 4 days, but it went away. Saw vascular dr. No clot. Saw ortho. Pinched nerve in disc. Seemed to explain everything. Went to therapy. Was pretty useless. Pain just came back with a vengeance last week. I've tried quinine, soap in the bed, acetaminophine, walking, stretching, and all the PT exercises I was assigned the last time. Nothing is helping. Pain is worse than ever. I'm in panic mode, because it could be a clot....DVT....but I could be overreacting.

Re: tingly, heavy arms
Just wanted to mention that if it is panic attacks you don't necessarily need any type of medications at all. I used to have them years ago and for me just knowing what it was and that I wasn't crazy or dying helped tremendously. I also did deep breathing whenever I had an attack and just let it kind of wash over me instead of fighting it. This was in my early 20's and I've had maybe 5 attacks since then. (I'm 43) I just hate that doctors always want to use the drug approach first. Try other things first and use the meds only as a last resort

Re: tingly, heavy arms
Please write back to let us know how you are doing. For what it is worth, you are not alone in many of your symptoms. I have the same tingling arms that you mentioned. The tingling happens every time I lie down and wakes me up often. I have the same occasional sensation of something moving in my arms. This tingling also happens during the evening if I am just sitting and relaxing, and I never notice it when my arms are active during the day. But my arms do feel some numbness and fatigue during the day -- I figure because they have been tingly all night. I do not have the same reaction to alcohol that you mentioned -- alcohol seems to neither help nor hurt. At the onset of my symptoms a few months ago, I also had tremor and some shakiness/loss of coordination in my left hand. This symptom has improved to the point that the tremor is now mostly only in the left index and thumb. I am also thin -- 6'1" 172 lbs, but otherwise healthy (I think). EMG test on left arm (my worst one) was negative. Doc has recently put me on Mirapex (a Parkinson's Disease or Restless Leg Syndrome med) to see if that helps with the tremor. I don't think that it does. I am finally having an MRI this coming week -- and I am praying this isn't MS or some other progressive disease. I have not yet been tested for Lyme Disease, but maybe that would be the next step after the MRI. Oh yeah... I almost forgot about your possible anxiety attack. You certainly can try various non-medicinal relaxation techniques to see if those help, but also make certain to mention this symptom to your regular doc. There are things that he/she can recommend -- both antidepressant and other. I had similar issues a few years ago, and an internal medicine specialist recommended that I try Levbid. This is a medicine often prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome (which I do not have), but it relaxes the gut and other internal organs, and the doc said that he has also seen improvement in non-IBS patients with anxiety-like symptoms. Just an idea. Best wishes to you, and write back with your progress. Thx ML

Re: tingly, heavy arms
I too am having tingling in my arms and also the left side of my face , I am having huge bruise appearing on my thighs and legs for no apparent reason. I haven't bumped them or hit them or anything. I don't know what is going on with me either. I was recently in the ER with 173/150 BP and admitted with heart attack pains in my chest and went through alot of shots in belly for thinnin blood . that was 3 weeks ago . I don't know what is going on. I am seeing the doctor tomorrow and hopefully will find out. My tingingling happens while sitting , standing , laying down and also my whole left side goes to sleep like and tingles . It is weird. I take Lyrica100mg 3xdaily,Talwin,Darvacet,Flexeril,Celebrex,Prevacid ,Ambien to sleep. I have Neuropathy, Multiple herniated nucleous pulposa Lumbar spine , cervical spine only one there but have spurs from cervical to thoracic, lumbar spine and 2 pinched nerves and chronic degenerate arthritis,. I do good to be able to still walk. I have had a stroke and that was the on set of the first tingle in face and arms. I hope you are not in the same mess as I was . All my problems with tingling are stress related or that is what the doctors told me . try relaxing more and thinking less about it all . get more sleep, take potassium , manganese , magnesium, garlic ,multiple vitimin , multiple mineral supplements and maybe they will help you too. I am trying them hopeing for a cure.the pain and spinal problems are to be lived with . The other I hope to do away with. MsCollom hopes you do better too.

Re: tingly, heavy arms
these are long term symptoms of lymphatic failure, which is a slow decline somewhat mimicing natural aging accellerated.
bits of deformed protiens and toxins build up in your body's tissues and sometimes blood as well. It strangles off circulation to capillaries. causing mild symptoms at first, eventually the back log plus the chronic infections this condition causes, build to a point that you get high bp or heart pain. these symptoms will also usually be accommpanied by off and on swelling and or bouts of pain in the groin area where the thigh meets the crotch, the armpits, the neck, the inner area of the elbow region and the lower abdomen especially near the line of the pelvis ridges.
These are end result symptoms people with lymphatic cancer go through if they are not given treatment and sometimes even if they are.
There is a silent epidemic of severe lymphatic illness right now in the US and possibly worldwide thought they seem to recognize it a little more.
Some of the imaginary diagnosis the epidemic is causing are: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, gulf war syndrome, lupis and ms. People really are sick but they are not sick from 'autoimmune' issues or what have you.
Some of the real diseases causing lymphatic falure are: chlamidia (especially LGV which is endemic and mexico and spreading but very hard to detect), human lymphotropic virus b (herpes family), weaponized micobacteria brought back during the first iraq war (proven and major lawsuit won against the us government) and several other "rare" or hard to detect pathogens.
Some of the reasons are: sexual sloppiness, people with lymphatic cancers living and spreading more disease, poor diet, pcbs from too many plastics, the effects of electronics radiation, poorly raised crops and cattle resulting in infectious and inadequate food, social turmoil of irresponsable, delusional and selfish societal values (largely contributed to by tv and music related fantasies and mimicry), 'medicine' that does more harm than good, doctors who either dont do their job or are attacked by various factions.
Listen up, if you dont beleive it- non-hodgkins lymphoma is the fastest growing cancer diagnosis in the US. But you don't have to get cancer in order to have your lymphatic system destroyed and to die from it.
