Unhappy Help - severe back pain in early pregnancy

I am 6 weeks pregnant and last week I nearly passed out due to pains across my lower back, it was so intense I had to lay on the floor at work. I went to the doctors and he diagnosed me with a kidney infection and gave me pregnancy safe antibiotics. The pain was still continuing and not lessening after id finished my 7 day course of antibiotics so I returned to the doctors who told me to go to casualty if I got the pain again. Soon after returning home I got the pains and went to the casualty at the hospital. They refered me to the gynocology ward & took a blood and urine test & found no signs of a kidney infection and both tests were fine. They prescribed me some pregnancy safe painkillers and said that it was probably high hormone level or ligments softening for pregnancy. It has now been 9 days and Im still suffering with such severe lower back pain that I cannot stand up when it comes, leave the house on my own, drive or go to work. The only symptoms I get are pain in my lower back which comes every 8-10 hours & lasts for about 15 minutes (no bleeding so not eptopic). Im so upset and distressed now as I cant believe that the ligments softening is so unbearably painful that I nearly pass out each time it happens and have to lay on the floor and I have no idea of how long this is going to last. The doctors arent very helpful either as they havent given me any further medication or any definite answer of what it is. If this is "ligments softening" has anyone had or heard of anyone suffering pain as severe as this? Please help because im at my wits end.

Oh God this sounds very familiar but until reading your post and speaking to a friend of mine recently who had a similar experience, I had been feeling completely lost, very much isolated and desparate for an answer as to why I was having such 'unusual' symptoms. The doctors were unhelpful. My pain was mostly in my lower back and hips but radiated both upwards and downwards, was excrucitaing and came on around the time my period was due (I am currently just over 4 weeks pregnant). It lasted over a day and a half. I still have lower back pain but the pain is now bearable. My friend did warn me that she experienced it for about three months and each time the pains came on around the time when she would have had her period. Hopefully given the date of your post you are over the worst of it but I hope this also helps other people out there also going through this.

I hope you all got this sorted out and your pregnancies continued uneventfully, unfortunately I too had severe lower back pain early in my pregnancy and of me it meant a missed miscarriage. This is when the baby dies but your body does not expel the pregnancy. My advice to all of you would be to not ask but DEMAND both an ultrasound and beta blood work to make sure the fetus is alright. I learned the hard way not to trust the doctors without some solid evidence to back up what they say. When I was pg with my daughter I never had back pain in early pregnancy, only later on. I for one don't believe back pain in early pregnancy is normal but is a warning sign of trouble.

I agree with the posting #4. I have been pregnant 3 times in the last 11 months. The first two pregnancies ended in miscarriage. The doctors didn't say why, but both times I experienced severe back pain first. This time I am at 4weeks and I had severe back pain one night. I was terrified that it was happening again. Thank goodness it was better the next morning, but I don't know if the fetus is ok or not. I will go today to get an ultrasound. Always be persistant if things don't seem right. You know your own body best.

    Stretches and Exercises

Therapeutic stretches and exercises are an excellent way to keep the pregnant body flexible, strong and mobile. Chiropractic doctors utilize these therapies to assist the muscles in coping with the increased demands caused by the sudden weight gain and change in weight distribution - which fatigues and irritates unconditioned muscles. Keeping the pregnant body strong and flexible increases comfort and improves the likelihood of having a successful pregnancy.

Proper Body Mechanics and Postural Practices

Sudden weight gain and altered weight distribution also lead to a number of improper postural and biomechanical habits. Improper postural and mechanical habits further increase spinal and pelvic stress which increase tissue irritation and produce frequent bouts of pain and discomfort. Chiropractors focus on teaching proper postural habits and body mechanics to minimize stress on the body, minimize the risk of injury and keep mom functioning optimally and without discomfort throughout her pregnancy.

I know that many women may experience many different things during pregnancy. I was experiencing some VERY severe pain that statred under my right breast and radiated towards my back. I was throwing up and I couldn't sleep because of the pain. Come to find out, after I couldn't take it anymore I went to the Emergency Dept. and found out that it was Gallstones. My gall bladder is going to have to be removed. The doctor's would like me to try and eat a low fat diet and they got the pain to subside and they are going to try and keep it subsided until I am in my second trimester, if not after my pregnancy is over. What I would like to say to you ladies is, trust your body, If something doesn't feel right, always have it checked out.

I am currently 10 weeks and 4 days pregnant and have exprienced for the first time yesterday excruciating backpain. I immediatly thought I had a kidney infection and went straight to the doctor. They did all the tests and like everyone else posted, the test came back negative. Again this morning I experienced the back pain in the same spot. The pain started off light and increasingly got worse to the point of pain I have never experienced before for about 20 minutes. My doctor hasn't said much of why this is happening or how to prevent it but assured me my baby is fine. Everyone in the office did not seem too concerned and I have not had any abdominal pain or bleeding. I did some research on the internet and why it did not help to let me know how to prevent or solve this back pain it was pretty clear this isn't uncommon just misunderstood. A moist heating pad has helped somewhat for me and I was told I could take regular Tylenol for the pain.

Red face Re: Help - severe back pain in early pregnancy

I am six weeks pregnant. At four weeks pregnant I had back pain so bad that I fainted at the physio. I have never fainted before in my life so was quite shocked. I lay flat on my back on the floor for a week and could not stand up straight. Apparently, it is the increased levels of progesterone loosening the ligaments and discs that haved aggraved my back. The only thing that has helped me is very gentle swimming every day for the last week. My back is still unstable but my gyno has said this won't improve till later in pregnancy when my hormone levels change.
