Very Sore Toe Tips and Toe Tops
Several of my toes are extremely sensitive and I feel an intense pain when they are touched. The pain occurs on some toes on the tip of the toe, a little bit below the nail, and on other toes, the pain occurs at the top of the toe. There is some redness where there is sensitivity and the skin may be slightly hard, but not especially so.
I have also noticed that my feet are much more sensitive to cold temperatures outside than they used to be. I have a hunch that the cold sensitivity and the soreness are related, but I am not sure.

Re: Very Sore Toe Tips and Toe Tops
same with me. it happens to me during the winter and goes away in the sumer. maybe its the lack of humidity?
it happens on my two longest toes on each foot, and bumping into anything is extremely painful.
if i do see the doc about it, i'll post again here.

Re: Very Sore Toe Tips and Toe Tops
I have a problem w/ my toes especially during Winters. I have what is called a Cold Sore on my toes, very similar to a cold sore on your mouth. It is not contagious or anything. The only thing that works is using Epsom Salt. Soak your feet in warm water w/ a handful of Epsom Salt, not too hot...but a bit more warmer than usual. This should help to dry it out and wear socks to keep your toes warm at all times. Keep using the Epsom Salt until you have no more pain on your toes. I find it wearing socks as much as I can prevents a lot of this. I had this checked out when I was pre teen and I will have this for the rest of my life and it only occurs the colder months. Some years I don't it at all and some years it comes and it can be quite painful. You can see little red spots w/ whiteness around it. Hope this helps you out!

Re: Very Sore Toe Tips and Toe Tops
I have the same thing and have been trawling the internet trying to figure out what it is. The very tip of my longest toe has been hurting for 2 months now. Wearing tights and socks seems to constrict it and aggravate it more. The cold seems to aggravate it more. It is sore to the touch and incredibly painful when I walk (but only in certain shoes). It doesn't look like there is anything wrong with it as it's not red or raised etc. If I were to describe it - it's almost like a thin blister is underneath the skin, it is slightly translucent. Has anyone got any suggestions of how to get rid of it? I may try that Epsom Salt.

Re: Very Sore Toe Tips and Toe Tops
I have a similar problem, but my toes also sometimes turn purplish. My doctor told me the coloring is a condition called Raynaud's (prounounced like ray-nose) syndrome or phenomenon. It is a constriction of the blood vessels in the extremities, brought on especially by cold. Tingling and/or numbness can be a symptom of this. The lack of oxygen can cause pain. The toes can also become ulcerated, which someone did mention they had a cold sore thing on one of them. That can be dangerous from what medicinenet.com has said, gangrene can occur.
Managment involves, of course, protecting the affected digits from the cold and trauma, as we know! In persistant cases, medications that dialate blood vessels could be prescribed. My doctor did this, but the medication made my feet swell some, get hot, and turn red...I told people I had lobster feet with sausage toes! It also made my heart rate go up, which perhaps was the whole idea, but I would also get a headache. Taking it was getting uncomfortable, but right now my toes are really bothering me, so I may be taking it again.
My doctor also told me to wear shoes with wide toe boxes and not wear cotton socks. This is to keep the toes from being constricted (with shoes or tights) and dry as cotton holds moisture).
Simple initial care involves keeping the body warm, especially the extremities. Going barefoot should be minimized right now. Be careful when clipping nails, as you don't want to have wounds on them because they won't heal quickly with lack of oxygen and could become infected. Direct and indirect smoking should be avoided. Medicines that 'thin' the blood, like low dose aspirin, can be helpful.
I'd recommend doing your own search on Raynaud's online to learn more. Hope it helps you all!

Re: Very Sore Toe Tips and Toe Tops
Extreme sensitivity to cold in fingers and toes usually points towards raynodes phenomenon.
I was found to have this problem myself and it finally explained to me why throughout my life I have had extreme pain in my fingers and toes after being in the cold when no one else around me did.
Raynodes causes spasms of the blood vessels in the fingers and toes in an over-reaction to the cold, limiting blood flow in those areas. This, in turn, causes pain and discoloration.
It can also be triggered by stress.
Anyway, I am posting this here because I have had the same problem with my toes lately and I tend to think that it has something to do with raynodes as well.
the tips of my toes are sore to the touch almost as if they were all bruised. They are slightly red as well.
Of course, as usual my feet are very cold to the touch, but now probably even more than usual because it has been very cold in this area.
Try going out of your way to keep your feet warm and see if it helps. I am trying the same.
