    Question infection eating away tonsil?

ok.. so i have this pus collection on my right tonsil. it covers the whole inside of my tonsil.. and i have hige tonsils. well.. it was hurting extremely bad..along with other symptoms: weakness/tired, fever, earache, chills, stomach ache, extremely hard and painful to swallow... my throat and left tonsil doesnt hurt.. its only the right.. and the swollen lymph.... so i went to the doctor they said i had strepthroat, but barely becuase the second line was kind of visible.. so they gave me antibiodics and pain killers... i've had strep before.. and it wasent like this. i think it's tonsilitus.. but i'm not sure.. anyway.. part of the pus collection came off at the top and it left a huge gaping hole.... is that bad?

any comments are appreciated on this whole matter.

are you asking if the big gaping hole in your tonsil is bad, or if your letting an infection on your tonsil get so bad you ended up with a big gaping hole is bad?
"Why Me?" I asked. A little voice said "Don't take it personally, some names were called and your's came up".

i didn't let it get that bad... i kept telling my mom it hurt and there was pus on it... and she just said take some tylenol and it would get better....she didnt even look at it. then i finally made her look at it wednesday, and she freaked. we went to the doctors yesterday.. and they looked at it for 3 seconds... and then was like oh strep. that is not enough time to even look at the tonsil...

so yes, is the big gaping hole on my tonsil bad? ... and could it proceed to eat away at my tonsil?

I wrote the "help me I can't do this again" on the first page. The same thing happened to me, the white patches were really red around them, and parts fell off that left big holes. My tonsils shrank away during the infection, and never came back. Now I am getting the same problem, but on like the sides of my throat where my tonsils were, and now they are small. I think it's VERY bad, even though my doctors seemed awfully nonchalant about it with me as well. I think you just have to be very loud, I am always so polite and quiet. Not anymore!lol. good luck, keep us posted, I think what I had/have and what you had may be similar.

I had exactly the same thing you did. I saw a doctor who said that it was just tonsilitis and gave me some antibiotics. They didn't help and a week later I went to emergency because I literally couldn't eat or breathe and they had a second look. Turns out it was a pretty bad throat infection, and they put me on penecillin. Now, its been about 3 months, they're still huge and have gaping holes, but the infection itself is gone. I saw an ENT specialist about two weeks ago and I should be getting my tonsils out in about a month. Yay!!! As for the holes, apparently its just scarring from the infection, and they fill with pus during the infection. Mine aren't infected anymore, but they look like moons in the back of my throat!! Lol. Get better soon and don't fret. ^^

Sounds exactly like what I have. I'm a 34 year old male. Happened very fast. I had a bad cold for about a week (coupled with insomnia and a lot of pressure at work - I think all this weakened my immune system and led to infection). Woke up Saturday morning with a bad sore throat. I checked it with a flash light and saw I had a swollen tonsil and a lot of white stuff on it. Thought it was strep. By that evening I noticed there were now holes in my tonsil. Very scary as this seemed to be happening fast. Also confusing was that I basically had no fever. Suffered through Sunday with a lot of ibuproferin and sleep. Drank a lot of OJ which increased the pain substantially. Salt water gargling seems to numb the pain somewhat. Cold fruit juice other than OJ also seems to numb it a little. 1st thing Monday morning (i.e. this morning) saw my doctor. She says no strep. Says the white stuff is kind of gooey which is not characteristic of strep. The quick strep test came back negative. She took a swab to grow in a petri dish to try to figure out what it is. This will take 24 hours during which time I suppose more of my tonsil will get eaten.

Cool Re: infection eating away tonsil?

I am currently going through this process, throat was sore on and off for around 2 weeks then three days ago i woke up and i couldnt swollow i had major stomach cramps, couldnt stand because my head pounded when i did, a big wite ball on my left hand tonsil, so i saw my doctor, he took a look and said it was tonsilitus (no mention of strep) gave me antibiotics, paracetemol and a mouth wash (all of which taste foul!) now 3 days in the white has dropped off (Gags) and has left a nasty hole..... tonsilitus is a reaccuring thing for me and my family.... maybe its time to have my tonsils out! hope this helps guys just see your doctor

You most likely have crypts in your tonsils. These crypts can be caused by infections. To keep them, you should gargle with salt water.

george1776, the third doctor gave me the right diagnosis. I didn't have an infection by either bacteria, viruses or fungi. What I had was acid reflux while asleep. He prescribed Nexium and a medicinal syrup with Sodium Alginate and Sodium Bicarbonate.
