severe left flank pain
I am a 50+ female currently suffering bouts of excruciating pain for 9 years. The doctors started with "pinched nerve," then moved on to discover diverticulitis, kidney stones, and thyroid/hormone imbalance. I finally had a great doctor who seemed to actually "CARE" about the specific cause of my pain, then 3 weeks ago, he died suddenly... this is not a joke. I have had CT Scans and a colonoscopy. I am currently diagnosing myself as having Pancreatitis, but the pain is in my left back, not my abdomen, and I have constipation, not diarrhea. Does anyone else out there have pain resembling a kidney stone passing, but is NOT a kidney stone?

Re: severe left flank pain
I have had the same severe left flank pain for the last 6+ months. It started with blood clots in August 2006. I was diagnosed with a Renal Thrombosis of the left kidney and a blood clot near the left ovary. I received tPA for the Renal Thrombosis and was placed on blood thinners until the end of January.
After the blood clots I began to experience constant left flank pain. I made several trips to the ER and have had numerous CT scans, MRI's, bloodwork, a colonosopy, sonograms, etcetera. At one point I was told it was ovulation pain. My OBGYN put an Meridian IUD in (the clots were caused by the Nuva Ring, so I can't take any Estrogen based products) to help reduce cramping, bleeding and perhaps stop my periods.
That has not worked; the IUD was put in in September 2006 and I continue to bleed and spot contantly. On February 7th I had laproscopic surgery done and endometriosis was found, along with a large amount of scar tissue. The doctors went ahead and removed my appendix as well, since it had embeded itself into my colon.
It's been almost 3 weeks since surgery and the surgery pain has subsided but the left flank pain has returned. I was told that there could be deep tissue endometriosis that could not be reached via laproscopic surgery. I'm supposed to receive a Lupron injection this week to aid with any remaining endometriosis that was not removed.
If this does not work I'm going to search for a renal specialist, as the pain continues to radiate from the area where my left kidney resides. I've begun to have a bright red/pink mucous discharge that smells horrible. I feel like I keep telling the doctors what is wrong, but no is listening or thinks I'm crazy.
You're not alone.

Yumaborn, this is your twin...there is a good chance you have kidney stones due to dehydration...hello, Yuma... and a diet high in protein which would also explain constipation. Found a site that describes your symptoms. I looked into the first site I found on google's list of kidney stones. Check it out. If it were pancreatitis, you would have abdominal pain and nausea.

Re: severe left flank pain
Hi, I just got the bad news that I have some sort of hyperthyroid problem, but have not been told what kind yet. I'm hoping it's something that will go away on it's own (pray). I have a pain in my left side, that is not very sharp...it almost feels like a stich in my side. It's in the front abdomen, and not the back. My mom is a nurse, and she thinks this may be the liver or spleen. My eyes are slightly yellow, but not completely yellow, and some thyroid problems can be triggered by infection or immune responses. They have recommended an ultrasound. It might be a good idea for you to get one too. I hope we all feel better soon.

Re: severe left flank pain
just reading all your stories and guess what im exactly the same, im 25 female, first i was tested for kidney stones, none were found, visited gynae department which is clear also, waiting to see a surgical doctor and dont no what hes going to do, im so fed up, seems no-one is listening to me. my symptoms are severe left side pain in back around kidney area, like spasms and any females may fell like its contractions when having a baby but only in your back. the pain stays in the same spot and doesnt move. one of the doctors thinks i might have adhesions caused by scar tissue, as i had an operation in 2002. oh im so fed up and no exactly how yous all feel. betty_boop81xx@yahoo.co.uk

Re: severe left flank pain
Has anyone mentioned that it may be UPJ obstruction? Not stones? I have been dealing with this on the right side for years. Tests yeilded nothing but because of an almost obscure indentation in my right ureter I had a stint placed and when they put the scope up my ureter it was completely blocked. Just a suggestion, I hope it helps.

Re: severe left flank pain
I have had left flank pain for eight months. I had my gall bladder removed 6 months ago, still have the pain. I have had MRI, CT Scan, colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, several blood test, as today, after seen 5 doctors, I don't have a diagnosis yet. My liver enzimes get very elevated when I have acute pain with vomiting. I am scheduled to see a liver specialist at the end of May, I was told it could be:sphyncter of Oddi disfunction. I don't have much hope anymore....in the last week I have muscle pain in my legs, I don't know if this is related or not.

Re: severe left flank pain
I've been dealing with left flank pain since Dec, 2006. I had a tubo-ovarian surgery on March 2007 and still have the pain. 3 ER visits, 4 CT, 5 Ultrasounds, one endoscopy... I don't know what it is. I 've navigating on the Internet and sometimes an "Enlatged Spleen" can cause this type of pain.
