What are red, pimple-like spots on upper arm?

Patients with these symptoms usually have what is called keratosis pilaris. This is a very common skin problem that consists of tiny, scaly, red bumps and pimple-like lesions.

Most commonly, it affects the posterior upper arms, but can also occur on the anterior thighs and buttocks. It is the result of mild plugging of hair follicles. Scratching, abrasive washes and tight-fitting clothes can exacerbate the condition.

Treatment involves treating skin gently. Use mild cleansers and don't overscrub arms. Use a thick moisturizer twice a day. Lactic acid-based moisturizers (such as Am-Lactin) are available over-the-counter, and the lactic acid helps smooth the skin and unclog the follicles.

Prescription tretinoin cream (Retin-A) is also helpful. Salex 6% cream and lotion are new prescription-strength moisturizers with salicylic acid that are showing some promising results. Both tretinoin and Salex are available from your physician.

    Good luck.

"Why Me?" I asked. A little voice said "Don't take it personally, some names were called and your's came up".
