My Dad can't walk

Hello all,

Wondering if you could help me on a possible diagnosis for my Dad affection. (We live in Mexico and it's kind of hard to get the right diagnosis here.)
He is 74 years old; mentally he is 100%, however, in the last year he has lost all motor strength to walk. This problem only is in his legs. No arms problems, no neck problems, no backache, and he eats very well.

Recently we needed to get a wheelchair, becuase he barely can stand.
He has tried massages but brought him a lot of pain...

What possible affections can cause this to him?

Sounds like peripheral neuropathy. The longest nerves in the body go first. Are his feet numb? Does he have tingling? I've had this for over 30 years, and I'm 75 now. It's getting gradually worse and the best neurologists in California don't have a clue. They can diagnose that they can do nothing else. I hear reports that cortisone helps. I wouldn't do it. I'm getting some relief from Chinese herbs, which if you have a good practitioner near you can be prescribed encourage nerve health. I've tried acupuncture from the best guy in LA and it is expensive and marginally successful. it also could be something else I don't understand because massage therapy is helpful to me. I get benefit from my elliptical non-impact exercise machine.

When this happened to my husband, he was at first diagnosed with Gionne Barret' Syndrone. Later it was changed to ALS, Amyothropic Lateral Schlerosis, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Read more about it at NIH.gov

When this happened to my husband, he was at first diagnosed with Gionne Barret' Syndrone. Later it was changed to ALS, Amyothropic Lateral Schlerosis, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was diagnosed in 2002 and has steadily declined. ALS can be diagnosed by having several tests, including an EMG. Read more about it at NIH.gov
