mono + side pain
Hi there. I'm writing because I'm worried about the right side pain I am experiencing. It's a constant dull pain that probably rates about a 4 from a scale of 1-10 (10 being a very sever pain.) It concerns me because I'm worried about my liver or my kidney. The pain is slighly more on my front side and ranges pretty much from my hip what feels like just beneath my lower rib cage.
I have been to the doctor several times. See, before about 4 months ago, I was very healthy and rarely-to-never went to the doctor. But 4 months ago I caught MONO (diagnosed by a blood test) and have had every probablem in the book since. While I'm doing much better, I'm still concerned about this side pain, mainly beause my immune system is still not up to par and it has persisted for about 3 weeks.
Now, the other thing to note is that I only have, in the last month, had two bladder infections, and some digestive problems. (I was constipated very badly.) Whenever I go to the doctor about this side pain they say it's probably related to either intestinal or bladder infection stuff. I have taken bladder infection antibiotics and am on fiber.... I don't drink much, but last time I had a glass of wine my side hurt for about 3 days....
And since I've been to the doctor about 12 times in the last 4 months, my bills are excrusiatingly high and I don't really know what to do.... If you have any advice I would greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely, Jessica

Re: mono + side pain
you can still have symptoms of mono even up to a year after. My liver and spleen are still infected...but mine was a very severe case. I was hospitalized.
my best guess is your liver may still be enlarged a tiny bit.

Re: mono + side pain
I went to the doctor with sever side paid that had me rolling in a ball crying that i have had about 3 weeks prior to seeing the doctor. I went to the doctor thinking kidney stone cause you know everyone is a doctor when your sick. anyway so i went to the doctor and she knew right away something was not right and had significant amount of blood in my urine, she thought kidney stone also. She gave me meds for bladder infection and said if it still hurt on monday then go to hospital. i knew it would still hurt cause it had been hurting constant for 3 weeks prior. Went to work attempted to work left went to hospital they did CT scan found no kidney stone or anything realitive to me hurting that bad. They did find that my spleen was swollen but was insignificant and should go away. they did no test of mono. so i have a swollen spleen so what?? they gave me nothing at the hospital. after about a month after that i went back to the doctor still hurting BADLY she got my results from hospital and she immediatley stated that she thought i had mono and was stunned that the hospital did not even test for it, so she took blood and told me i did not have mono. About a month after that i went back to doctor still with pain in my side but now i think i have adjusted to the pain, do not get me wrong I know it is there. It is nothing to joke or kid a about if I laugh the wrong way turn the wrong way it hurts!!! Although there are days that it does not even hurt a single bit it is gone. Some days i can be sitting at my desk at work and then the sharp, stabbing, numb feeling that feels like your spleen is about to jump out of your stomach through your ribs. That s another thing when my side hurts and I have to adjust my guts my moving side to side and just below the front of my rib cage sometimes it feels like I am tucking my spleen back to the other side of my rib cage which it may help momentarily, but then its back to the side to side motion. So last week I went back to the doctor and she looked worried almost like she didnt believe me but i think she did. anywho She poked at me again tested for mono again and also for west nile i got the results back today and negative for everything. The sad thing is that I almost wanted to have west nile just so i can say i knew what i have and reasoning behind my pain. Still no answer why my side still hurts sadens me. My doctor directed me to a specialist I think called a urologist?? we will see. also a coworker of mine had been have really bad back pain and she joked thinking she had mono but wierdly enough she has all the same symptoms as me: kidney stone, nope mono, nope even a urine and bladder infection.. MY question is what are the reasons behind so many cases of this pain that is getting to people??? why cant they figure it out i have had it for atleast 5 months now....please help
Sincerly,
Still hurting after all these months

Re: mono + side pain
Hi, i'm a 23 year old female. My problems started at the end of November 2006. First I had pain at the right side of my belly, just onder the ribcage. constant dull pain with stinging pain attacks, that worsened with eating fatty food, poking/resting on my side or exercise. I also had chills and sweating, although I had a low fever. After a week I went to see a docter. He told me that I would probably have a bladder infection, they tested my urine and it came back slightly positive. I got antibiotics and everything would be ok. But the antibiotics didn't work so I went to see the docter again and this time the urine test came back negative. Then I had some bloodtests and an ultrasound done which also appeared to be negative. After a few weeks the pain expanded to the left side of my belly, about the same place, under the ribcage. And also pain in my lymph nodes in my groins, sometimes this goes down to the inner side of my legs to my knees. My armpits are sometimes painful too.
after a month I went to see the internist and he ran a lot of bloodtests, x-ray of my lungs and urinetests. They all returned negative except for reumatoid factor, which was very high, positive.
After that I had 3 bloodtests done, IgM mononucleosis, IgM cytomegalovirus and lymph glands.
I'm still waiting for the results.
The most annoying, I have to skip lot's of things, work and studying at university. I am experiencing so much pain that I have to lie down at least once a day.
I tried to ignore the pain as much as possible but that didn't work out. So now I try to rest much, but the only things that are fading away are the stress symptoms, like fast heartbeat, stomachproblems, tiredness.
What to do if these last bloodtests come back negative?
Every advise is very welcome.
p.s. @ None, I'm starting to feel desperate and wishes a diagnose, no matter what. There has to be an answer to our pain! have you already seen a specialist?
@ Jessica, high bill levels, no wonder you've experienced pain after drinking. Try to see a specialist, for your high bill levels, maybe your liver is still weak, or you might have other liver problems.

Re: mono + side pain
Hi, I had a similar thing happen to me in college - same kind of pain in the right - so bad I could harly breath or stand up straight. I was in the hospital for a week and they ran all kind of tests. Everyhting came back negative. They gave me a special diet. Nop spicy foods and no caffiene. They thought I must of had a virus. It did go away. I would limit spices and caffiene for now, but do continue to see a doctor if it does not go away.

I Have Had A Pain In My Right Side For About 6 Years. I Thought It Was From Taking Tricor But Only Took That For One Month But The Pain Has Continued. I Am Diabetic And On Glyburide, also Lisinaprill To Protet My Kidneys. I Have Stopped The Lisinaprill For 5 Days Now And Still Have The Pain Altho It Has Lessened In Intensity. I Don't Have Bladder Infection And Have Never Had Mono. So What Can The Problem Be. As I Understand There Are Many, Many People With This Pain. There Has To Be A Solution.

Re: mono + side pain
I have been having terrible pain and nausea for 2 yrs. I had a lot of the other symptoms you have. I have had several tests done and gone back to the doctor still complaining of pain. I have lost my job because of this and missed out on my daughter's life. She just turned 2. I was sent to a general surgeon and he did a test called Nucular Scan where it checks your gall bladder better then what a ultrasound can do. It came back that my gall bladder was not functioning. I had it removed in Jan. of this year. I am doing a little better but, now I have other problems. Anyways maybe ask about that test to check your gall bladder.

Re: mono + side pain
I've had mainly right sided abdo pain for about 6 months now, I've been through all the tests, and after about four months was diagnosed with a virus, Barmah Forest Virus (Australia only). However, my symptoms of sore abdo continue, and this is not relevant to BFV. I have seen a specialist as a blood test also detected Anti Smooth Muscle Antibody, but this was only positive after I was tested for it a second time. I'm very confused as to what is wrong with me, and I still can't get a diagnosis. My gastroenteroligists says it definately isn't BFV, but thinks there is some possibility it could be the start of Primary Sclerosing Choleangitis.
Any one got any ideas.

Re: mono + side pain
you guys should all check out the possibility of irritable bowel diseases....that's celiac's, crohn's, and colitis, and IBS....the way you describe pain on one side really sounds like it's crohns or something, which affects one piece of the intestines....I am absolutely surprised that none of your doctors have checked your intestines....
