Default Misdiagnosis of a Stoke for a Dislocated Shoulder

    Dear All

How difficult is it for a qualified Doctor to mistake a stroke for a dislocated shoulder. This is what happened to my Mother despite my insistence that it was a dislocated shoulder. I even saw the X-ray and told the Doctor it was dislocated (I've seen enough of them playing rugby) but he just kept saying it was a stroke. This meant my Mother was kept on a drip and without food for 3 days untill they rexamined the x-ray and and re-discoverd that it was dislocated and ended up relocating the shoulder and breaking the humerus in the process.

    Regards

    Dear Monsterlove

    Many thanks for your reply.

I looked at the X-ray with the Doctor and it was obvious; the ambulance driver and the nurse in casualty also agreed it was a dislocated shoulder. The Doctor just kept lifting my Mother's arm up and dropping it saying it was a stroke. It was only after 3 days and a scan for a CVA? that they decided it wasn't a stroke. They kept her off oral food and drink because they had no one available to do a swallow test? The explanation that has been given is that the SHO Doctor was inexperienced at looking at X-rays! What does that mean, is Radiography an option for medical students? The same Doctor has told me he is not qualified to look at another X-ray of my Mother's knee which was injured after they managed to drop her getting her out of bed. She has now been in bed in hospital for 3 weeks and could walk before she went in but now she is so depressed all she talks about is ending her life. I know she is elderly (86) but after 3 weeks I have no idea whether she has broken anything and the physios will not do a thing until they find out. I've spoken to PALS but the nursing staff and medical staff are just covering their backs and one might say rewriting history. Its just unbelieveable.
