Unhappy Low Testosterone in 35 yr old Male

Hi. I'm a 35 yr old male with low test. I lift weights and eat healthily. I started having episodes of ED five years ago. This lead to depression and anxiety. I had my testosterone checked, and it was 266. My doctor sent me to a urologist; he gave me a prescription for Viagra and sent me on my way. Long story short, I met a girl, got really comfortable with her, and found I didn't even need the Viagra anymore. Problem solved or so I thought.

Now, five years later, having been single for a while, I've started having some impotence problems again. Also, my sex drive seems low. I went to the doctor and had my testorone level checked again. This time it was 415. Higher than before but still on the low side. I know that Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra will work, but it feels like cheating.

My doctor suggests I take an SSRI called Lexapro. He thinks my low testosterone and ED may be linked to depression. I'm a public school teacher, and I do get really stressed out at times. Also, I tend to dwell on negative thoughts more than I think I should. I have never taken anything for depression or anxiety, although I've considered it in the past.

Recently I've begun to take a lot of so-called test-boosting supplements. None have worked, although tongkat ali seems to have a minor effect. I would take a larger dose of long jack as it's known in weightlifting circles except it's really expensive.

Finally, I know that testosterone comes from cholesterol. My cholesterol was really low. It was 140. My doctor said my low cholosterol could be linked to my stress level too. Short of pigging out on saturated fats, what could I do to raise my cholesterol?

There are so many things to think about. I'm going to try the Lexapro. If it doesn't work, I think I may opt for androgel. I know I'd be on it for the rest of my life, but I feel like I'm 80 years old.

your level doesn't actually sound all that low - low average for men is 250 or so. If you want though, you could get your self tested for Kleinfelter's - XXY - just takes a karyotype test, though now I believe there's another test that's more popular because it also diagnoses degree of mosiacism

Urologist are pretty useless for Low T. Even if your T is 415, which is reasonable, the factor that counts is Free Testosterone, which is only about 2% of the total, (when it's in the typical range). Find a D.O. or an Anti-aging Doc. I had all the issues you mentioned, and was about to be perscribed Lexapro also. The problem of Depression, Low Liblido, ED, are all sign of Low FREE T. Join this group hypogonadism2@yahoogroups.com and pose your question there. They are real guys who are total experts on these issues.
Really, the bottom line is to find an expert doctor in T issues which is really not easy. The database on that forum has a good list.
    Good Luck!

Do you use a cell phone or live or work close to any towers or antennas?

An INCREASE in testosterone levels after exposure to microwaves has already been proven (along with an increase in cortisol, the stress hormone), but some researchers believe that if these exposures continue for too long, testosterone levels will actually drop below normal, though most studies only run about 2 months, not years, as most men use these devices today. What's important to note is that testosterone levels WERE indeed affected by these exposures.

Schools often have antennas on the premises, too, so you might want to look into it.

    OK... here's everything

Cardiovascular Disease - get a CT angiogram and check for clogged arteries 70-90% is considered a problem..I had a 70-90% blockage at ostial D2 and diagonal branches at age 37. They will no do anything for 50% closure and that is not your problem then maybe...

Next.... Adrenal issue... maybe low cortisol... causes low blood pressure and if let go can be fatal.... fatal after adrenal crisis stage. Adrenal gland can have a tumor or not producing enough cortisol. Cortisol has a lot to do with headaches, abdomial pain, low back pain, Erectile Dystfunction, Fatigue, Hypothyroidism, Low Blood Pessure (like 90/50).... Adrenal crisis happens when all the pains and headaches and blood pressure drops below 80/40 which personally happens to me. I a going through this process now. My erection has returned now that I take cortisol supplement. I still need further info.... getting tested... Addisons Disease? Cushings Disease, Tumor, possible pituitary gland issue not letting adrenal gland produce enough cortisol and other gluterocorosteroids of whatever they call it. Not this then maybe its this...

Thyroid needs to be tested. Standard TSH levels off standard AMA Metabolic Panel does not ensure that thyroid is ok. Doesn't seem right? Then maybe it's this ....

    Physcological Issue.

If you can get hard and masturbate, retain an erection and can ****** when doing it alone then it is psychological.

Anyone else with more knowledge is free to add. I have been chasing this dragon for 2 years and finally Blood Pressure dropped to 80/40 and then 80/35 at the hospital... They had the direction to start looking in finally... and it all made sense with my lower back pain, loss of weight due to abdominal pain (didn't want to eat to make the pain worse), Headaches every day....... Cortisol is a Hormore..... My issue is a Hormonal Imbalance and also shows up low for people suffering from Fibromyalgia or CFS (chronic Fatigue Sydrome). Studdies have shown 92% improvement in patients in a study when cortisol was added to regimen. I aslo show positive for EBV. Epstein Barr Virus (aka CFS)....it shows active.... we all have it but our immune system needs to keep it in check. It is an easy task for basically everyone in the world but a few luck people develop Chronic Epstein Barr Virus. You can get and EBV Blood Panel and see if it is an active infection of if it is in remission. Like I said.... Every human being has been exposed and will show that they had it at one time.... the question is "Is you Immune System able to keep it in an inactive state?". Doctors do not know if CFS is the cause of low cortisol or if the low cortisol can create the CFS. This is a very specialized and rare disorder.... Hard to find good doctors. Endocronology Specialist time for me.

    Good Luck

Viagra won't help low testosterone at all and Lexapro is widely known to decrease your libido so don't take that. The big problem with testosterone reference ranges is they include very old men who no longer work a job or have an active sexual life. So what is normal for a 90 year old man is not normal for a 35 year old, yet the reference ranges don't take that into account. Klinefelters patients, for instance, typically have a testosterone level in the borderline 300 range, yet by most reference ranges they would be classified as normal even though they are anything but normal. The official endocrinologist guidelines are that anything below 300 warrants a diagnosis of hypogodadism, though anybody under 400 may have many symptoms of low T. The big problem is if you are young and want to have kids, the standard treatment using TRT either through injections or gels can potentially make you sterile if taken long term. It will shrink your testes to the size of a raisin rendering you effectively castrated and dependent of TRT for life. It's not clear at all if it will help your libido problems either in the long term. Clinical studies have shown inconclusive results in that area. However, energy levels should improve greatly. There are also "off label" treatments using clomiphene citrate (Clomid) that work well for some people. Drug companies can't make money off this so it isn't pushed onto the public the way products like androgel are. But trying to find a doctor to prescribe Clomid for this purpose can be a challenge. I have heard some urologists will do it.

I would love some more comments I am 35 also went to doctor as I had one instance of Ed once doctor explained it was psychological I returned home and functioned fine as far as the Ed. However the doctor ran a blood test for testosterone he called me today to let me know that my testosterone was low at 175 when it should be 300 at my age not sure what test was run so not sure how to quantify the numbers vs the other numbers here on this site my doctor said it was slightly low and probally caused by being overweight I gained 80 lbs in four years when I quit smoking (6'5" 275) I am in good shape arms legs and chest but I have a beer gut but I do not drink. Anyway I am supposed to try a patch and have more blood work in six weeks I have been reading all symptoms and I really only have the fatigue issues and I am always bugging my wife for sex I have three kids so obv no infertility only been with my wife since age 20 so doubtful regarding HIV ( I read that causes lowt) I realize I am rambling but I am freaking out as to why I have this diagnosis at a young age there is a history of thyroid in most of the people in my family. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated as I did not really get to talk with my doctor since it was a phone call kind of a cliff hanger... Ugh ... And the more I read on the Internet the more concerned I get... Diabetes, HIV, altheizmers, Ed, infertility, loss of hair , sex drive, etc. Etc etc kind of scary when you look at the quantitative analysis without any reassurance from your doctor...

I guess just a few simple thoughts

Low testosterone can cause depression and the other member that posted here is correct that some antidepressants can make your situation worse.

Also the time of the day that you have your blood test to test your testosterone levels should be factored into the equation - the testosterone blood test should be taken before 10am. Also you need to check some other hormones that regulate testosterone such as LH, FSH etc to see if you have pituitary problem - if so you will need to have this imaged.

Other organs that may affect low testosterone are testicles, lung problems and given you are an ex-smoker I would simply get a chest x-ray to rule out anything serious. Also the adrenal glands would be worth some simple blood tests to rule out adrenal insufficiency that may also affect your testosterone levels.

Also you should check your PTH and Vit D levels that may also make you feel a bit depressed if not in the normal range.

Loss of weight around the mid-gut will help with both the ED and libido and also likely assist with the depression.

Vigrara will help with ED even in patients with low testosterone

If not in a relationship some papers suggest that **** watching is good for maintaining and overcoming ED.

Hope these help your situation and that you start to feel better soon.
