Burning feet after standing for a couple minutes
Here goes,
I am a 28 year old female, and after visiting 7 different doctors and having all sorts of tests, I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in my feet.
My problem began about 5 years ago when my feet would hurt and burn all over after standing on them for an hour or so....then it became a half hour....now it is only a few minutes and I want to sit down.
I thought it was circulatory at first, they feel so hot sometimes, but an echo cardiogram in my chest, legs and feet showed normal (would laying down during that exam make a difference vs standing?).
It sometimes feels like the blood makes it down to my feet ok, but not back up.
Anyway, the last dr I visted was a neurologist who did a nerve conduction study and said it was abnormal. He then did a bunch of blood tests including diabetes and heavy metals posioning, thyroid, immune diseases etc. Nothing.
So I was told that all I could do is cope. But I can't help thinking that it is not neuropathy. There is no history in my family. The dr said it could be a mutation in my dna.
I wonder if it is metabolic, or kidney related.
I do have problems with energy, and the only other outstanding symptom that bothers me and has not been diagnosed is frequent, sometimes urgent, urination. That has gone on for a few years-and it seems to be worse with age as well.
Anyway, I have no other issues with my health except those just mentioned. I am slim to average build, so weight on my feet shouldn't cause this much pain-but I can't even go grocery shopping anymore without wanting to sit down. Even talking to co-workers gets painful if I am standing in the hall.
I am dreading the rest of my life because it seems this is only getting worse. If anyone knows anything, please please let me know or point me to someone who does.
Thanks.

Re: Burning feet after standing for a couple minutes
I am a 28 year old female also. I was diagnosed with an autonomic nervous system dysfunction. I have burning sensations in my lower legs and feet. My
primary doctor referred me to a cardiologist. My cardiologist performed a ANS test. It showed my nervous system was all out of wack. He started me on coreg,
aldactone, proamitine, and elavil for the neuropathic pain and swelling. It has been a year since I have been on all these medications. I am a licensed practical nurse and since this diagnosis I been out of work. I have applied for social security disability but the first time I been denied. I am currently awaiting on an appeal to receive social security disability benefits. I can only stand for about 45 minutes or sit even and the burning starts. i hope this information could help you. Please see a cardiologist or neurologist to receive this test. Lots of luck.

Thank you so much for your reply. I was happy, yet not :-), to see someone respond with a similar problem. I wanted to ask a couple things. First, when did you notice the pain? Has it gotten worse with age? Finally, are the meds working at all for you?
Fill me in whenever you have time.
Thanks again.

Re: Burning feet after standing for a couple minutes
DID YOUR NEUROLOGIST DO AN MRI. IF NOT, THEN HAVE HIM DO ONE ON YOUR BRAIN AND SPINE. THESE ARE ALL SYMPTOMS OF MULTIPLE SCHELORIS. IT CAN BE JUST ON YOUR BRAIN OR SPINE OR ON BOTH. IF HE TELLS YOU THAT THESE ARE NOT SYMPTOMS THEN HE IS NOT A GOOD NEUROLOGIST. I HAVE LIVED WITH THIS DISEASE FOR ELEVEN YEARS AND KNOW WHAT SYMPTOMS YOU CAN HAVE. EVERY ONE IS DIFFERENT AS TO WHAT THEIR'S ARE. SHORT OF BEING PARAYLISED I'VE HAD JUST ABOUT EVERY SYMPTOM THERE IS. THERE ARE MEDICATIONS NOW TO SLOW DOWN THE DISEASE. MEDICINES FOR INFLAMMATION, AND PAIN THAT ARE NON-NARCOTIC. I WILL PRAY THAT YOU FIND THE RIGHT DOCTOR TO HELP YOU. GOOD BLESS.

Re: Burning feet after standing for a couple minutes
I had very similar symptoms: burning pain that starts in the foot and works its way up into the calf. The burning gets worse as the day progresses making you cut back on your activities and can keep you awake at night. i also had nerve conduction test some out abnormal in my foot/ankle.
It may be Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. Here's a link so you can read more about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarsal_tunnel_syndrome
My advice would be to consult with a Foot and Ankle surgeon who has experience with Tarsal tunnel syndrome....even the foot surgeon who treated me said many people have a difficult time getting the proper diagnoses.
I am also a young (32), healthy female and my burning foot pain has given me many sleepless nights, but with treatment (I eventually needed surgery) things are doing much better. Good luck, i hope you find some relief.

Re: Burning feet after standing for a couple minutes
I've had the exact symptoms as you for probably 20 years, tho only recently as severe as yours. I'm 56 and don't exercise much at all. I've never looked into it thinking it was 'just' poor circulation, "the blood gets down okay but not back up" as you describe. If I put my feet up, the burning sensation subsides, which also made me think it was circulation.
Obviously it's time to get some help because I'm standing and walking around a lot on my job and I don't want it to get worse.
thanks for telling your story.

PS to clarify: my symptoms are burning in the feet only, not going up my legs - P

Re: Burning feet standing/walking/sitting
I am a 44 year old male somewhat overweight that has burning in my feet all of the time, standing, walking, and sitting I have been diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy, however more tests need to be done to verify the real cause. I am waiting for the results of the blood tests taken this AM. Is it a vitamin diffeciency or MS?

I have had two emg's done and the neurologists said no nerve damage. Please help I also have other symptoms and all of this occured after I had a surgery called Cervical Diskectomy w/Fusion on C5C6 in my neck. Now I have a whole range of problems the worst being my arms.

Re: Burning feet after standing for a couple minutes
My Son is now 16 and has dreadful problem with this. He can not stand for more than a few minutes without his feet tingling/burning/itching and generally driving him mad. Of course this is going to be a huge problem when he needs to find a job. This isn't a new problem for him but one which obviously isn't going away!
We live in Switzerland and I don't know what sort of a doctor to take him to about it. He has a hypermobility disorder and pronated feet so I guess the tarsal tunnel thing could be a problem. He has worn special orthotic insoles in his shoes and that hasn't helped with this problem. He also has dysautonomia symptoms and has fainted a few times.
By the way, you mentioned that your Doctor tested you for Mercury poisoning. Chronic Mercury poisoning doesn't show in blood tests and urine tests can give false readings too. If you are worried about this being a potential problem try looking through some of the forums on Mercury toxicity. There are several in the yahoo groups.
Back to my Son- anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Kittykins
