deafness from mumps

My husband has been deaf in one ear since he was ten years old from the mumps. He has inner ear nerve damage. He hears constant ringing in that ear and even in his other ear too. His good ear he only has about 90 percent. It's been over 20 years since he's been to a hearing specialist and they said there wasn't anything they could do. He said his good ear is getting worse. Is there anything that can be done?

Hi. I read your comment. I am a 35 years old woman and I live in Caracas, Venezuela. One year ago I got "parotiditis" and ever since, I am deaf in my letf ear. I also have that constan ringing in that ear (and sometimes in the other too). That is, pretty much the same case of your husband. I wanted to ask you whether you have foung any solution to that problem. I have been recommended to use the BAHA, which is an "apparatus" that helps you to hear throught your craneal bones. Any hepl, I would very much appreciate it!!!

The BAHA...what is that? I've never heard of that. Are you talking about the cochlear implant? I was told that wouldn't help my husband.

The ringing in his ears is feedback....like when you have a short in a radio and is called tinitus. My husband even asked them if they could go in and cut that nerve to get rid of the ringing and that not being able to hear he could deal with that but the ringing drives you nuts. But they explained that it was like having a short in a radio...you wouldn't know where to cut the wire. He was told the only thing that he could do was biofeedback but my husband told them if he hasn't figured out how to cope with the ringing after all these years that biofeedback would be a waste of time. It's been probably 25 years since he's seen a hearing specialist and I was hoping they've made some new advances in this area.
