You need to visit a pain management dr. It seems that since there are so many drug abusers of late, that dr's take the safe route and refuse to believe anyone Is in pain, generally pain mgmt docs know of obscure and rare diseases, and might be able to help you with your sleep problem as well as take care of your pinched nerve. Over all doctors have become so scared to treat people in case they are an addict, that people with real problems are left to suffer, I had back pain for over 10 yrs, I'm no doc. I just knew it hurt. Finally they found a huge tumor in upper to mid back, my paIn is low back, so they did X-rays etc. Only in low back, anyway don't let them make you feel crazy, its your body and they are in your service, demand they do their job, pain mgmt docs are best road. Good luck!

You may just have anemia. Its and iron deficiency in your blood and is common for your age. Its simple to check for and very easy to "cure". Good luck.

I am 20 and diagnosed bipolar. My situation is similar but differs in a few key ways than many that have posted.

I sleep for atleast 15 hours a night, but I do not toss and turn, snore, or wake up frequently, although I'm told I sleep with my eyes open occasionally.
If I wake up early (around the 9 hour mark) I eat, go to the bathroom and right back to bed, usually without even remember I did so.
I can sleep through anything, including the 17 alarms that should get me up.
In my teens I was on every psych med you can imagine but they all made it worse.
When I finally wake up, I am not tired and if anything I'm in a panic.
I do not nap, and I'm not sleepy during the day or even before I go to bed.
Sleep is a choice for me. If I need to go to a morning class, I will not sleep. I can go over 30 hours without being sleepy, but once I chose to sleep there is no waking me up.

My life is falling apart because of this. I've been asleep far longer than I've been awake over the past month and I may have to quit school now because of it.

There is also another key difference with me; I have no health insurance or income to speak of.

Unhappy Re: sleeping up to 14 hours and still tired.

I am 22 years old and i have the same problem!! I personally try to deny how bad it is, but when it comes down to it i love to sleep and cant get enough of it apparently. When i wake up in the morning after a good 7 to sometimes 10 hours of sleep i am STILL exhausted...Ill get up, eat, shower and wanna take a nap already after only 2 hours or so. I feel like i should be well rested but yet i am still groggy and out of it; My eyes will feel really tired, and my brain remains in a relaxed state. I feel like i sleep so well, i dream A LOT! yet i cant get myself outa bed in the morning.
My sleepiness has affected so many aspects of my life. I get moody, i dont wanna clean or do anything productive (most of the time)...sometimes it even affects my sex life, which affects my relationship! Im so young and im generally healthy (NOT OVERWEIGHT!), I shouldnt be this way! I have tried so many things to change my ways, but it feels like nothing i do works. There are so many things i want to accomplish but at this rate my mind and body are so exhausted; im scared ill sleep my life away :/

You should go to a trip with your friends to a hill station and some kind of the natural one sides... Have some kind of the fun with your friends and chill with them... This will help you keeping your mind relax and keep you energetic and also reduce your sleep timing...

Question Re: sleeping up to 14 hours and still tired.

I'm 13 and have the same problem... you probably won't get this because it is now 2011 and you posted yours in 2008, but did you ever get back into your normal sleep patterns?

I feel your pain. I'm 24 years old, female, and I have the same problem. Again, I'm not depressed or anxious at all...I'm actually one of the happiest people compared to many others I have met. I absolutely do not drink or do drugs or smoke, I never have, never will. The simplest way of putting it, is that I'm just tired. That's my only symptom. I can sleep for 6, 7, 8, 9, all the way up to 15 hours and still feel tired. Take a nap after I wake up from a full night's sleep, wake up and still feel tired. My eyes feel weird all the time like I just woke up after I've been awake for 3 or more hours or more. I thought maybe it was my vision, but went to the eye doctor and got glasses and all they do is make me feel cross eyed and dizzy and give me headaches. I've tried taking vitamins, they do nothing. I thought I narrowed it down to just not being a morning person, but that's definitely not it because I can wake up at 1:00 pm and feel like I could go back to sleep for another 4 hours. I work from home and can pretty much make my own schedule, but I think that makes it worse because I would like to wake up in the morning to get stuff done and I just can't because all I have the urge to do is go back to sleep. I haven't gone to a doctor, because quite honestly I'm too tired to go and don't feel like someone telling me it's depression when I know it absolutely is not, LOL go figure. I know I'm not a lazy person, I force myself to go to the gym almost everyday and work out for about an hour and a half. I feel like I could sleep all day after working out, when that's supposed to give you more energy. I eat relatively healthy, but I'm about 10 pounds overweight for my height, I'm trying to shed the extra 10 pounds and I think I could do it, if I wasn't tired all of the time. I've been thinking about going to the doctor to see if they can figure out what it is, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I thought maybe it was hypo-thyroidism or anemia since that's common in females. I just don't know, but I need to do something about it because I feel like I'm wasting my life away by sleeping.

hypersomnia is a symptom of chronic fatigue sydrome. (With CFS you will have MANY different symptoms). I once slept for days due to this with only waking up a few times to go to the loo.
    .................

My inability to get out of bed in the mornings was also being caused by hyperinsulinemia (abnormally high insulin levels). Thou most medical stuff says this causes no symptoms, for many with it it actually can give symptoms... Ive come across many online who have it and do get symptoms like myself from it.

On my 2hr glucose tollerance tests with the insulin levels being taken too.. it shows that my insulin is still abnormally high even after 12hr fast.. so I was waking up in the morning with it still high from my dinner the night before and it makes me feel tired so I wouldnt want to get out of bed. (this issue has been fixed for me by a low carb diet which is even stricter then a diabetic diet.. carbs are in most things).

best luck to all seeking for the cause of their hypersomnia

    Hey sleepy
I have the same problem ive just turned 16 only i think i sleep a little bit longer than some of you guys haha i can have a 14-18 hour sleep and then whenever i nap it's never just 20 minutes or even an hour ands always between 3-4 hours
I've just left school so now it is considerably worse than how it used to be when i was at school ive been told by friends that it may be because of my sleep pattern being disrupted. I looked in to hypersomnia and other sleep problems but i havent found the time to visit a doctor and i don't want to worry my mum. But its nice to know that there are people out there with similar problems to me !

I sleep too much it's leading to depression I think. When I wake up I
feel I have no reason to get up so then I go back to sleep when I wake
up maybe two hours later all I can think of is ways to wrap on a rope
around my neck. Now I know this sounds serious but it's all ********
I would never do something like that, my father took his own life, I
have two kids and will never do to them, what he did to me. The
problem is if I tell this to the doctor he's just going to put me on
antidepressants. I have been on them before they were no help.
Actually they were the cause of my divorce. Like you and your post in
09 I have a hard time staying awake I force myself to at work but
shortly after waking I feel like I need to sleep if I'm involved in a
project I'm very high-energy. Driving home is a nightmare I fall
asleep at every red light. The days I don't have my kids I sleep
countless hours. When people are around I have tricks to stay awake
and alert. A lot of coffee vitamin b complex and diet pills. Most
interactions with people are no longer the the cocktail of uppers can
    handle.
I recently ordered Provigil and hope this one pill can replace my
"heart attack". I'm 35 all I do is cope with my problems. I sleep
every available hour. I'm there for my kids when they need me and for
my job when it needs me other than that I'm asleep. But then Bam once
every 2 to 3 months I can't sleep at all. I mean I'm tired but my mind
races I'm up all night. So I have Ambien for this which pretty much
fixes that problem. I don't abuse it because I know I will become used
to it so I'll only take it three days a week until the problem is
solved. However the problem never is solved because now I'm back to
sleeping back to thinking of the ultimate resolve.
