Frequent Nose Bleeds!??? Help
Hello. I am a 36 year old male and my nose has been bleeding for 6 days now off and on. It started on Sunday. I sneezed and all of a sudden blood started pouring out of my nose like you were pouring a cup of water. I pinched my nose and the bleeding wouldn't stop. After about 20 minutes I had my wife drive me to the hospital. It was coming out of both nostrils and going down my throat. By the time went got to the hosiptal it had stopped and we only talked to a nurse and he said to go to an ENT because he didn't know anything about and that we should go see an ENT. Monday I was drozzy all with pressure behind my right eye and the top of my head felt like it was burned. Tuesday we went to see a speialist and all he did was look up my nose for 2 seconds and cauterized one spot with the chemical sulfer nitrate. 4 hours later my nose was bleeding again. We would get it to stop then 30 minutes later it would start again. After the 5th time we went to the hospital. However when we get to the hospital it stopped bleeding. The doctors there cauterized it again in two different spots with the chemcal. Then they stuck a nose plug up into my nostril and said that will stop it and to have it taken out in a couple of days. They did blood work and said eerything was fine. 36 hours later blood started running down my throat and out the nostril with the plug. We went to the hospital for the third time. They took out the plug and called in a specialist(ent) to check it out. Before the doctor even look at me they brought in a welder looking machine and needles. So they already knew what they were going to do before the even look to find out what the problem was. The Doctor shot novacane into my nose 3 times and cauterized it with and electrical charge. (monopolar) Then she put some fiber to help clot the blood up there. She told us that will do the trick and that we had to see her again in a week. The next day my nose again started to bleed. Now, I haven't sneezed, I haven't blew my nose nothing the whole time this is happening. I spit out huge blood clots and the come out me nose too. I have headaches and still pressure in me face on my right side. We stop the blood, then again in a couple minutes it would start again. So we went back to the hospital where again they look at us like we are stupid for being there. They did nothing and said we have to wait all weekend to see another specialist. So, it is still bleeding off and on. I am frustrated and don't know what to do any more. Can any one help?

That sounds rough, I am sorry you aren't feeling well. My advice is just go to a different hospital to get a different view on your situation. Please don't hold off on it, this problem really needs to be taken care of.

My husband had his nose cauterised too, but he still gets nosebleeds. He has had them for years. Do you have a bleeding disorder?

I'm having a similar issue. My nose started bleeding 2 days ago. I've never seen so much blood, and it wouldn't stop. I went to the hospital where a doctor was finally able to get it to stop. Yesterday my nose started bleeding again. I tried to make it stop for about an hour by pinching the soft part of my nose. Still blood was rushing down the back of my throat. So back to the hospital where the doctor stopped the bleed, and cauterized my nose. Today, my nose started bleeding again but I was able to get it to stop. The doctor did say it could be the result of dry air or blowing my nose too hard. I have had a little bit of a cold and have been sneezing often. He also said 30% of the time when they cauterize they don't get the right spot and it will start bleeding again. He also said that at some point in someone's life they might be come more prone to nose bleeds for a little while. It is extremely frustrating and I can't help to think that there may be another underlying reason. Furthermore, I have classes tomorrow and the last thing I need is to have one of these nose bleed sessions in the middle of lecture. Oh, and I have midterms next week. If I keep getting them over the next couple of days I'm going back to the hospital. One thing I have noticed they all seem to occur when I'm in my room. I've had a humidifier running for 2 days now so I don't think its dry air. I'm wondering if it couldn't be some other environmental factor.

Hello, I've been getting frequent nosebleeds for many years, and I have to say that the "hold the bridge of your nose" trick isn't helpful for me. Like you would for any cut/scrape, I take a rolled tissue and apply firm pressure to the exact spot that's bleeding (not just indiscriminately shoving it up there). It sometimes takes quite a few tissues for a bad one, but it works if you just hold it on the spot as long as possible before carefully removing it and getting a new one. Sometimes I'll hold ice on my nose while I'm doing this (a funny sight) but I don't know for sure if that actually makes a difference

I can't speak to causes, although genetics seems to be a factor (my mom and maternal grandfather have always had them). Stress also seems to bring them on occasionally, but it's usually just irritation, itchiness from allergies, etc. Also, once I have one I'm more likely to have one later that day or the next day, until it fully heals.
I hope this helps!

Anyone find an answer to this often puzzling and frustrating situation. It's happening to my dad and been going on for 4 weeks. ER says to see ENT and ENT does the cauterization procedure and than back to ER to be told to see the ENT again. Family doctor just refers him to the ENT.
Finally, after 4 weeks, the ER admitted him for observation and to administer 2 units of blood because his blood count was only 7 and it was 13 four days ago. He has lost 15 lbs in the last 4 weeks and he is not a big guy. Doesn't need to lose weight. He is becoming weak from all of the loss of blood, has very little appetite and does not do anything to trigger the nosebleeds. He can be sitting in his chair just watching television and they start.

I had nose bleeding offen for many years. and in an out the ER and ENT. my left nose have been cauterized many times . the doc said it won't work anymore.I may need skin graft in the future, whatever ..
Since last year, when my nose bled I start treated it myself by using Nasalcease stick ( 5 /perpack ). put one in for half an hour , some time I may need 2 or three. this is not the best way. but I am still glad that this had helped cut down the time I run to ER. LJ

Re: wb9h6w
Now, I am researching nosebleeds tonight, since I have a new situation... most probably
a combination of dry air, chronic sinusitis, and acute hypertension... I trade/invest the
stock market, and after the past 2 years this past 3 months has been a joke. The bleeding
comes from the front part of my right nostril, once or twice per day for the past week...
easy to stop with a wetted small plug of paper towel.
When I read your description, my first thought was, "Sounds more serious than a
more frequent-type situation..."
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/sym/nosebleeds.htm
[snip]
4. Tiredness, weight loss, fever, night sweats?
Why: may suggest malignancy such as leukemia.
[snip]
You should try to identify where the blood is coming from. If it is from the back of the
nose, that is more serious. Most bleeding occurs in the front part of the nose (Little's area), at the narrow passage where air passage is constricted, drying the pathway.
That is the place where mine originates.
This has some interesting facts:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epistaxis
I think your father needs more attention, to at least rule out more serious causes.
Has his blood been fully worked up, to check platelet count, etc? Has a more serious
cause been ruled out?
I do not like to say this, but it has been my experience in life, by age 42, that diagnosis
is an art many doctors are not extremely good at when faced with oddball situations.
Quite honestly, I remember how medicine was practiced 35 years ago, my grandfather
was a general practicioner and an Army surgeon, and things have changed a good deal.
A doctor used to know the patient like I knew my old car in the 1980s, now, well...
We, the patients, are like cattle on a slaughter line, and you have got to learn and check
what your doc is up to, your self. They will miss things and misdiagnose, if only because
they are just plain average. We cannot all have Ted Kennedy-style care, unfortunately.
They will simply work through the most to the least common cause, cookie cutter style...
sometimes missing a cookie cutter or two.
Do not ignore the situation, please. The loss of weight, the tiredness, that is troubling...

Re: Frequent Nose Bleeds!??? Help
I can relate. What aggravates my nose is allergy and especially dryness in the winter months. After two years of going through many hospital and ENT visits, including one trip in an ambulance - like you say - the blood just pours out - and dealing with various types of cauterization, the thing that has worked for me has been an over-the-counter item called Ayr gel. I put a small dab on a Q-tip every morning (morning and night in the winter), swab both nostrils, and it keeps my nose from getting dry and bleeding. I still am careful to be gentle when blowing my nose. This product has really helped me. You can get Ayr gel at most drug stores; it's usually near the cold remedies and sinus sprays. I've been totally nosebleed-free for the past year and a half. Give it a try.
