Question Looks like depression, but it's not

Hello- My husband has been through several years of doctors and diagnosis' but to date no one has been accurate and he continues to have the same symptoms monthly with little or no relief. We initially thought he was suffering from depression but now I am not so sure. Every month from the first to the 10th (give or take a day) he wakes up feeling irritible, restless, depressed, moody, fatiqued, has trouble sleeping and concentrating, his senses become very acute, he experiences a strange taste sensation when it takes his first bite of food, has a lack of motivation, and a general feeling of anxiety. He went to his general practitioner, an internal disease specialist, a neuro, and now a psychiatrist who has a very good rep but cannot figure out the problem or meds that will help. He has a very high resistance to medication and we have tried increasing the dosage of his medication but nothing seems to work. After ten or so days he wakes up and feels "like a million bucks." He has been on Lexapro, Paxil(I think), Cymbalta, Wellbutrin and Lithium. He is now on Limictal. He was tested for Lyme, low testosterone(sp?), and thyroid idsorders. His B12 came back low but according to the docs, not low enough for these issues and it would beon a more regualr basis. We are stumped and he is frustrated. Any ideas would be great. Thank you...we are truly at a loss.

Could he try having b12 injections anyway and see if it helps?
Or is there any possiblility he could have bi-polar disorder?

Hi-thanks for your suggestions. He did go once for a B12 shot and then decided to take supplements. I was the once who ultimately called his doc and suggested a bi-polar disorder. It's a definite possibility although he doesn't exhibit the normal manic episodes. He says he feels a bit better today on the Lamictal but I am a true skeptic now, nothing has worked for more than 8-10 weeks. I made an appt. with a holistic doctor and perhaps he can figure out what to do or take. A lot of people on this site seem familiar (and happy) with Bioset. I've never heard of it but maybe I'll check it out.

Often a holistic approach can really make a difference, especially when allopathic medicine has no answers. I would look more into the B12 deficiency - this can cause all of his symptoms and could be cyclical if his stores aren't up enough. One injection isn't going to do this. Please read Sally's thread on B12 misdiagnosis on this site. Methylcobalumin is the preferred choice of B12, and a very good brand of supplements is Jarrow's Methyl B12.

Also, NAET or Bioset may be very helpful. NAET can determine if he is showing a sensitivity to B vitamins in general. If this is so, then he is not going to assimilate the supplements he is currently taking. NAET can help correct this and allow him to absorb the nutrients he needs. You are right that many folks have had great results with Bioset and NAET. It is noninvasive, nondrugs, and yet very effective.

    Best wishes

Look up andropause and the treatment with testosterone. Has he been to a urologist? How's his libido during those episodes. Use that as a reason for the appointment. Urologists are generally more up-to-date with male andropause.

Thank you for your suggestions. We are planning to go see a Naturopathic doctor on the 17th of this month and I assume he is familiar with NAET and Bioset and I believe he will have a VEGA test to determine his sensitivities or physical "balance/imbalance" and then (hopefully) he will have some sort of remedy that will rectify his symptoms. I am not very familiar with NAET or Bioset and whether or not a Naturopathic doc would be the person to see. This particular Dr. came highly recommended. We shall see. I will mention the B12 because I definitely have not ruled out that his B12 deficiency is not the cause. His current Dr. told me that his levels are in the 200's and that is not low enough to be this problematic. However, it may well be that for my husband they, in fact, are too low. Noone ever gave us any specifics regarding that and we assumed it was nothing to be too concerned with. I will review Sally's thread. Thank you -At a loss

Hello Ataloss. I was not familiar with NAET until I found this forum. You see, I am a nurse of 15 years and I know how to treat someone "the good old western med way" The very idea of doing something "alternative" was a difficult path for me. Someone in this forum recommended it. She said she had all of my symptoms and NAET relieved them for her. I was desperate and the neurologist who diagnosed me informed me that patients were seeking help in "alternative" realms for these types of illnesses...I had severe chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.
I've had 7 treatments and I am going back to work on Sept 24th for the first time in over a year!! I noticed MAJOR improvement after just 3 sessions.
Last year I was told to apply for SSDI. Due to my "illness" and inability to function like a normal human being...I would probably not work anymore.
I'm so grateful to this forum and to people like Eatafruit78 who encouraged me to try this and to people like accuann who is currently becoming a practicioner. She is seeing first hand the results, I lived them. I went from being a zombie to being a human being again and for this I am very grateful.
Please take the advice...it is the best you will find anywhere...mommy cat

PS...Vitamin B12 loss or depletion is not a diagnosis...it is a symptom. I was very ill with an illness that usually depletes B12...my levels are that of an olympic athlete...according to my doc, yet I still had many low B12 symptoms.

Let us know how NAET goes!...best regards...mommy cat

    Dear Mommycat-
This was literally the last step. If my husband is at the end of his rope I can assure you I am too. This is literally killing him and our life. We have a five year old daughter and I/we are concerned how this(his symptoms) may impact her in the long run. My husband is willing to try anything at this point as nothing has been successful. I hope that most naturopathic docs are familiar with this, that is my concern. I am not certain where to go if this practitioner is not aware of NAET. Anyway, your support is very helpful, thank you. I am glad you have had some relief. As I watch my husband I wonder how he, and others, manage to cope on a daily basis. Ataloss.

Dear Ataloss, If the naturopath is not an NAET or Bioset practicioner...PLEASE find one for your husband.
If you let me know where you live, I will help you find one.
Here is the link for the US map...click on your state and the practicioners will come up.
