I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
Hello all,
im new here hoping to find some help. for the past 5 or 6 years my eyes have been constantly blood shot. i always get the question "are you high?" "have you been smoking?" I'm on a computer a lot, but i've had this problem even before i got into computers. I have been using Opcon A and other eye drops for years. Even though they get the redness out, it keeps coming back after an hour or so and i always wake up with really red eyes. Here is a picture of what im talking about

Now what could be the cause of this? how can i get rid of my problem? I'm so tired of it!

Re: I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
I have had the same issue for years as well, but I am predisposed to occular redness due to allergies. Issue is that being on an anti-histamine and and a cortico-steroid (Nasonex, Rhinocort, etc.) the redness leaves for a short time and then reappears.
Was told by optometrist, that the more I use products like visine, the more my eyes will continue to keep getting red and worsen. But because I get tired of the pointing out that my eyes are "really red" I decidedc to keep on using the drops. But by 5:00 PM when fatigue sets in, or if ovelry tired, the redness is truly bad, and they do burn a bit... so the drops are welcomed by my eyes.
Not sure if it helps, but I have had the same issue for over 20 years...

Re: I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
i had a optomotrist tell me that today. she said all eye drops do is make the red blood go away in my eyes, then when it comes back, its just as bad. she said the best thing to do is stop using them and it could get better. but i cant do that, i work at a bank all day.

Re: I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
If you have bloodshot eyes, light sensitivity probably is UVEITIS.
Generally the treatment is with PREDNISOLONE drops (1 drop 3 times per day) but you must get a precription here in the USA.
I recommend that you see and OFTALMOLOGIST, for a complete review.
NOTE: sometimes there is an infection, so you need to put some drops with antibiotics, this if you have pus discharge color green or yellow.Last edited by moderator; August 17th, 2007 at 12:08 AM.

Re: I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
I have had the red bloodshot eyes for about 2 years and have complained to my eye doctor many times. He does not seem to care that it bothers me or answer my questions as to why they are bloodshot!
He seems more interested in running more eye exams on me every 3 months than answering my question. He had given me a new Rx for my glasses last year and I complained that they just were not working and he ignored that complaint too. The last time I was there, I wouldn't let it go and kept telling him that I either needed new glasses or they gave me the wrong lens, low quality or something and I kept at him and wouldn't shut up.. They ran tests on them and sure enough, they had given me the wrong lens.. Yea! I AM looking for another eye doctor.

Re: I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
Hi everyone, I have had the same symptoms for the longest time, and finally....after years of suffering with bloodshot eyes, red eyelids, eye pressure, eyepain, eyelids itching etc, I found out I have a condition called "Ocular Rosacea" look it up, you will be amazed and saying, "omg thats sounds like me!" I have facial rosacea and 20% of people with facial rosacea (facial redness) have Ocular Rosacea. Google it, you'll be amazed.
The treatment is the opthamologist gave me a prescription for Fucithalmic eye drops for 4 months, this is an antibiotic. And its best to start cleaning your eyelids twice a day with Lidcare towelletes (you can get them in a drufgstore) or baby shampoo.
The sad thing is, this is a rare disorder. Since my diagnosis.......there is no doctor, pharmacist or anyone whos ever heard of this disease. I find that quite odd........
But the internet is loaded with info on this disease. So if you have many symptoms that I have, maybe you have this, especially if you suffer from facial redness.

Re: I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
I have had this same problem for over a year now and its just getting worse and worse. My eyes are much worse than that picture above and they won't get better. My eye doctor has tried many different types of eyedrops but nothing helps. I havent heard of this ocular rosacea but I have all the symptoms that they list.
Has anyone else talked to their doctor about this treatment that Stephanie is talking about and what were the results. I doubt that Stephanie checks this forum anymore but I would like to talk to you if I could, I just want these bloodshot eyes to go away once and for all!

Re: I can't get rid of my Bloodshot eyes
I am a 28 year old male. I also suffer from bloodshot eyes, especially when i wake in the morning it looks like i've been smoking weed all night instead of sleeping. This presents a huge problem when you have people to see or work and you don't have eye-drops. I guess this has been going on about 4 or 5 years and it's starting to really pester me. People treat you differently when your sclera isn't bright white like it should be. People assume you are a drunk or a stoner when you may not be. It is incredibly frustrating to have people staring into your eyes not because they are beautiful but because they are trying to determine what is wrong with you to make your eyes so unhealthy looking. People think you're sick and it is a huge detriment to your self esteem. Those of us who suffer from this are entangled in a vicious, destructive cycle because we seek relief in OTC eye-drops when we have red-eyes but this practice is counter-productive in the long run we all know now. Eye drops become almost as an addiction because we relate eye-drops the same way someone does when they apply makeup. It enhances our appearance, even if only for a little while. I look upon babies and even adults my age with envy when i see a bright white sclera and wish that mine would shine that bright but it never does. I'm a black male with green eyes, so naturally people are trying to look me in the eye longer than most people and when they are red, it is not an attractive sight. I never thought i would dislike such a member of my body because of a relatively simple concept: tiny blood vessels showing up where they shouldn't.
