    Default Reiter's - Peeling Skin

I have had continuous peeling of my palms/fingers and feet/toes for the last 3 years. Doc's have diagnosed as Keratolysis Exfoliativa. I had prostatitis prior to the peeling skin over 3 years ago and was tested for everything (std and otherwise) and nothing was found (including cultures and PCR - mycoplasma). Never had arthritis, but did have a recent bout with KB (w/vesicles) on one sole, which is typical of Reiters.

Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions? Should I expect things to get worse with time or better? Thanks very much. –Nick

I'm not sure what is going on with you. I'm not familiar with reiter's! However I have been dealing with peeling from the soles of my feet, toes and around my finger nails for about 7 months now.My nails have become very soft on both fingers and toes. It is very frustrating. There are times that I can barely wear shoes due to the pain it causes. I went to a dermatologist and all she was interested in was, what did I think of my appearance and was I interested in any botox for the laugh lines I have developed over the years. I told her I had earned any lines I had and I thought they added character. She gave me some salve to apply and told me to soak my feet in rock salt 2 x per day. Well, it hasn't gotten any better and soaking in rock salt is extremely painful!!! Not sure where to go from here. I truly feel that something else is going on. I will add you to my prayer list and hope that you will get some answers in the near future. Take care and don't give up. Linda

    Hi.

    Just reading your article.

My 13 year old son has peeling skin on his hands and feet, and a small part of his knee. its like he is shedding the top layer of his skin.
He has no pain, thank goodness. But don't know what it is. I wondered if it got any better for you

I've had Reiter's for about 9 years now, and I too have had the peeling skin, mainly on the soles of my feet. My undertsanding is that because Reiter's is in the same family of arthritis as Psoriatic arhritis that sometimes you can get some similar symptoms such as the scaling on the feet and palms.

I am a little confused though - you say you've never had arthritis, but that IS what Reiter's syndrome aka Reactive Arthritis is. Do you mean you have never had many arthritis symptoms? And if not then how did you get the diagnosis of Reiter's?

I don't know about Reiter's, but have heard of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis which is caused by MRI's. There is a big lawsuit going on right now with it and it causes the skin to peel. It's caused by the gladium dye or however you spell it. Do a google search on it, you might want to bring the possibility up with your GP.

I'm not sure but my son has been peeling on his hands and feet since he was 2 he is now 11. He has just recently gone through one of his Shedding episodes I call it where his hands blister up and then the blisters begin to pop and the skin gets real real tight where he can barley bend his fingers and then they begin to peel large chunks of skin at a time over a period of 7-14 days and then new skin comes in and he is fine. The odd thing is that his hands do this almost every Jan and his feet the same almost every July. They say Eczema is what he has but I am not buying it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

I would like to know if you found out what your daughter had. I have a granddaughter with
the same thing, it just started a few weeks ago, had her to the Dr. and she said she did not know what was going on, she is going for quite a few tests. The skin is peeling on her
fingers and toes, big patches just seem to peel off, not painful so she says. Please let me know how you got along. Thanks.

My Reiters began at about 9 or 10 years old (I'm in 40s now) with Balanitis. This was variously misdiagnosed over the years. About 10 yrs ago, I saw an allergist for allergy issues, and he turns out also to be a reumatologist (sp?) and asked about the Balanitis. Then I got describing what I thought was Athlete's Foot and he looked at it (small red dots, like a mild rash, not blisters, under the arch) and said I had Reiters. Since then, that foot (left) has proceeded to get very crusty, flaking skin (hyperkeratosis, I think) over the sole area (not the top) and toenails have likewise gotten sort of softer and flakier and rough looking.

HOWEVER, I never had the arthritis symptoms. Apparently my case is chronic but exhibits only what might be deemed secondary symptoms. The Doctor said it's unusual to have the foot thing on only one side, but, there it is.

I get the feeling that this may be Gallbladder related. Do you have any other issues with health or pain anywhere? What is your diet? Do you exercise?
