Re: sciatica nightmare
The causes of sciatica are many but it most commonly results from either a herniated disk or spinal stenosis. Depending on the cause, the pain of acute sciatica usually goes away on its own in four to eight weeks or so.A thorough diagnostic work-up will reveal the cause.Fortunately, sciatica typically resolves without the need for surgery in about 4-6 weeks. However, if any neurologic deficits develop, such as a foot drop or changes in normal bowel and/or bladder functions, then immediate surgery is usually performed. For acute sciatica without any neurologic deficit, the use of epidural steroid injections can be very beneficial in resolving the discomfort.

Re: sciatica nightmare
Hi Catwoman,
I feel for you, I suffered with sciatica for years too and also got mine in my early 30's I tried everything too. Well almost. Now when you say you have tried PT I am not sure what you mean. Have you tried Yoga stretches?
This is what I found to be the cure for me. Remember all drugs only mask the pain, none of them actually cure anything.
The great thing with Yoga is that you only do as much as you can and gradually your ability to stretch will increase and your strength will build. You really need to release the tension in your muscles, specifically the Hamstrings, Piriformis and lower back and improve your core strength. Yoga will do all of that for you.
You may think that this will hurt, but it will actually relieve the pain as it improves your flexibility and takes pressure off of your sciatic nerve.
As for other forms of pain relief try hot and cold packs. Cold packs will reduce inflammation in the sciatic nerve and surrounding muscles and hot packs will improve blood flow in the area, which speeds recovery and they don't have the side effects of drugs.

Best of luck

Re: sciatica nightmare and accupuncture
I have been dealing with sciatica for 3 years. The first 2 years saw me in constant pain - every hour of every day. Then I found a GOOD chiro, who brought me to a point where I was in pain maybe only 40-50% of the time (still not fun). Then I moved to India. Have been here for a few months now and have done almost 60 treatments with an acupuncturist who uses a long needle. I have many ups and downs throughout my treatments, and feel like my body is changing (for the better a lot). He is not very open to questions, and wants me to have upmost faith in him and his treatments. This of course is difficult for anyone from the west who wants to understand what is happening to them. I have come though to have faith in him and am feeling positive about the treatments. He says it will take 80 treatments to be "cured." I have some questions for you:
- do you think i can be cured or just relieved?
- he is telling me to not leave my house to walk, go to the beach, etc., which is very difficult b/c I am an extremely active person. Though I feel my body is shifting in the way my bones are positioned, I also feel like I am becoming weaker. Do you think I SHOULD be doing nothing? And for how long? I can't seem to get a clear answer from him on this.
Thanks!
