Default Recurring earache and sore throat

I continue to get a recurring earache combined with a sore throat. (When I swallow, I can feel teh pain go up to my ear through my eustacian tube). This has been going on for almost three months now. The first time, I went to the Dr who gave me a 10 day supply of antibiotics, my symptoms went away but within two days of completing them, it came back. I went back to the Dr. and he prescribed the same anti-biotics. The same thing happened. It went away and returned within days of finishing the anitbiotics. It continues to occur about every two weeks now. Sometimes switching from the right side to left and back. I finally went to an ear dr. who said he couldn't see an infection, but noticed I had thrush. He gave me medicine for that along with allergy medicine. I normallly take claritan, but it did seem to help, so He prescribed Zertec and also gave me samples of Allegra. Neither of which helped, As i am sitting here again with another earache which hurts when I swallow.

Can anyone give me some advice? I am starting to think it is all in my head. (no pun intended)

I am going thru the same thing right now.. I went to the doctor, he said it wasn't an ear infection it was prob. allergies, gave me a nasal steriod and Claritan D.. Well the sore throat sort of went away but the ear ache keeps switching from ear to ear. It hurts pretty bad when I swallow. I noticed taking 4 advil helps for a short time.. At night seems to be the worse if anyone else finds out what this is please let me know. Its been 2 weeks of pain now.

I have the same exact symptoms as the original poster - with the same doctor response (minus the thrush). It doesn't feel like allergies to me because there are no other symptoms usually associated with sinus allergies - and I know because I've had them as well.

It is usually worse at night and I have actually figured out that the pain is greater at night if I have worked out in the morning. If anyone has any suggestions I'm certainly looking forward to hearing them.

Thrush is basically a yeast infection in your mouth/throat. You should go see your primary care physician and get it checked out. They will do a throat culture, and also might want to run some blood tests just to make sure nothing else is wrong. If it is Thrush, you will get a 10 day perscription of Diflucan. Hope this helps.

Unhappy Re: Recurring earache and sore throat

omg I and my sis in law and my daughter have the same exact thing - my sis in law has had it a week longer then me and my daughter a week less then me and were all going thru the same thing - weve taken everything under the sun and I have been to the doctor. My doc tested me for mono but said she suspected it to be viral and gave me nothing for it. This has been going on for over a month now and the only relief any of us get is taking 800mg of motrin - its not a normal sore ...its more like a feeling of throat closing on you ...like swelling ...and tongue being sore on whatever side it chooses to hurt on that day .....and the pain is not totally ever going totally going away ...its just sometimes tolerable. Pain shooting to my ears when I swallow. From my research on the net it seems alot of people have this and for long periods of time. Not to mention all over the country and some in England - and no doctor is coming up with anything .....noone is finding any relief either. An above mentioned poster said advil helped her ....and motrin helps me so does that not lead us to believe its inflammatory in nature?? It seems were all afflicted with some kind of crud ...I guess its going to be up to all of us to come up with ways to get over it.

Question Re: Recurring earache and sore throat

hi everyone, i have had this problem my whole life and always thought it was just an ear/throat infection, untill recently i had a smear test and it showed i am a carrier of a bacteria called streptoccocus G which is apparantly associated with sore throats , as i have tried to read up on it, i have made this connection myself so just wondered if do any of you carry the streptoccocus G bacteria and if so maybe it is this thats causing it??
but if you do get any answers please let me know as this is killing me....slowly!! lol
    thanks so much peeps xx

Wow... I feel like I am in the twilight zone. I have these SAME EXACT symptoms. I feel like it's been going on for almost 6 months now. I have been getting a sore throat every few weeks, sometimes a fever, sometimes headaches and the most recent time I had the WORST ear infection known to man. I finally decided to go a doctor and they gave me a 10 day supply of antibiotics for the ear infection. I felt better until about 2 days after I stopped the antibiotics and my sore throat came back with a vengence. I have been taking 3-4 ibuprofen each morning just so that I can function through the pain. The pain in my throat seems to change sides, but (knock on wood) the ear pain hasn't yet returned.

I have looked on the internet and considered maybe cat-scratch disease from my cat, or maybe some kind of STD, or even gastro layngeal reflux... but none of these match my symptoms like what I have read in this forum.

Has anyone found out what is causing this?

Wow.. I have had the same thing for about a month and a half now. I let it go for three weeks untill i became semi deaf in one ear and went to the doctor. Prescribed antibiotics and sent me on my way.

Four days after finishing the pills my ears are back where they started and my sore throat never fully went away. Anyone know whats up??? Sitting here in agony

P.S. If your planning on going on a plane trip take some allergy medication and bring LOTS of gum. The pressure on the way down is enough to incapacitate you for a few hours
