Elevated Liver Enzymes, Night Sweats, VERY VERY TIRED
Hello, someone pls help.! I have had elevated liver enzymes for over 2 yrs now, and now over the past few months I have really bad night sweats where I wake up soaked! I also feel so sluggish and very very tired and have put on 30 pounds in over 1 1/2 years!!! I had a hysterectory at a very young age of 29, and was on hormone replacements for a very long time. Had appendicitis a little after but nothing since, been pretty much healthy and seeing my primary dr. once a year.
My problem is I have never really felt so bad as I do now. I once had so much energy, up to maybe 2 yrs ago and my health just seems to be going downhill. I am 51 yrs old and feel 80! I weigh 143 pounds compared to the 109 I once weighed a year or two ago. I am a very upbeat person and not at all depressed, just wish one doctor, just one doctor could diagnose my problem. I have had blood tests, which constantly show the elevated liver enzymes, but with no other problems, my dr felt this wasn't too uncommon. At this years' annual exam my blood pressure seemed to be elevated (182/101) and is high at times and I sometimes will find myself at a store and all of a sudden I will feel a flush come over me and my heart starts feeling like its going to jump out of my skin, and I am told this is PCVs. Can someone pls tell me what is going on?

Hi FlorenceN. I am not a doctor but your symptoms sound quite similar to those of menopause with respect to the hot flashes. If you had a historectomy and then had hormone therapy, it would seem logical that the missing estrogen was supplemented, but (as I assume you stopped) now with it missing, the hormone levels return to what they would be in a post-menopausal woman.
Of course the extreme tiredness and elevated liver enzymes...this is actually one of the symptoms of infectious mononucleosis, however mono lasts only about 3 weeks and the white blood cell count is elevated to around 2X the normal level, usually along with severe tonsilitis and fever. On the other hand, the Ebstein-Barr Virus (which causes mono) has arguably been linked to a condition referred to as "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" (CFS); you may want to ask your doctor to test for antibodies to EBV just to see if you have been infected. Usually after the mid 20's, it is rare for a person to actually come down with mono and thus it's presumably possible to have the virus (especially since you can get it from someone else's saliva- sharing a drink, eating utinsels, etc). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an actual test for CFS but if you have antibodies for EBV it might at least explain something.
What liver enzyme is elevated? Is it Billirubin?

Have you had an ultrasound on your liver and gall bladder? My elevated alt and ast numbers returned to normal after getting my gall bladder removed.--Mary S.

Have you seen a specialist? Elevated liver enzymes can mean any of several problems, like Hepatitis A, fat cells seeping into the liver, Biliary Cirosis of the liver (no, you don't have to be an alcoholic to get this kind of Cirosis), and several other problems. Go see a gastro-interologist and have a complete workup done. And in the meantime, keep a notebook with symptoms and when they occur. Look for things like darkened urine, if whites of your eyes look yellowish (jaundice), joint pain, flu-like sympoms, diarrhea, abdominal pain/cramping, etc. That will be helpful to your doctor in concluding a diagnosis. But go see a specialist - soon. Your primary doctor should have aleady referred you.

Re: Elevated Liver Enzymes, Night Sweats, VERY VERY TIRED
Dear FlorenceN... I too had horrible night sweats...from my 20's into my 30's. I was told I had everything from perimenopause to cancer and was even tested for leukemia and lymphoma. That's how ill I was.
I was finally properly diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. I had a list of over 70 symtoms. I was dying.
Someone here referred me for NAET or BioSET therapy. She said that she didn't have a "diagnosis" either but she had all of my symptoms and this stuff worked!
I went to a BioSET practicioner. After my first session, my joint pain disappeared. After my first 3 sessions, my condition improved 85%.
I have now gone back to my "real" (haha) doctor and he is astounded!
I have also returned to work after being told to apply for SSDI. I would never be able to work again...at age 38.
I have lost 30 lbs without effort, my hair, eyes, skin and nails are healthier than ever and I even have cycles with no PMS!!!!
I am so astounded that next year I will become a practicioner myself.
I'm a believer.
Please give it a shot...at this point, what have you got to lose?
take care and best wishes.....moommy cat

Re: Elevated Liver Enzymes, Night Sweats, VERY VERY TIRED
For a long time I have had night sweats (7 years) and a year ago I started having bloating, heart palpitations, severe blood sugar problems and fatigue among other things. No one has been able to tell me what is wrong. I started to watch my diet carefully and removed gluten from it which has helped with bloating and malabsorption, completed a series of cleanses, started taking vitamins, enzymes (helps with digestion and nasty cough that I get otherwise) and probiotics and did a handful of liver/gallbladder flushes. I don't know exactly what did it but I don't have heart palpitations or night sweats anymore (as of 6 moths ago), my fatigue is gone, and I only rarely get hemorrhoids these days. The thing that I had worried most about were the heart palpitations and they seemed to disappear after about 3 or 4 liver/gallbladder flushes. The night sweats are also very rare unlike the previous nightly occurrence. I still avoid gluten because I don't digest well when I eat it and I also still watch when and what I eat to avoid blood sugar problems, otherwise several of my symptoms are gone and I am so relieved- there is hope. I spent many a night worried and scared. I have had a side ache (for 5 years), never mind rectal bleeding, that I have finally determined as intestinal pain and am getting a colonoscopy in two weeks to find the cause of the pain. I hope that my experience helps you.

Re: Elevated Liver Enzymes, Night Sweats, VERY VERY TIRED
Your symptoms sound very similiar to suffers of panic and anxiety disorder. Particulary waking up at night with sweats and such. It is also common with this type of disorder for the attack to come at the same time each night. Additionally, the panic that ensues during the night and loss of sleep can lead to to the weakness experiened during the day etc...
Of course there are pharmaceutical courses of treatment for this such as xanex, etc..
Eventually you will find that the root couse of you panic and anxiety is psychological in nature. Not to fear even further by the stigma of a potential psychological issue here at all. In fact there are an enormous amount of people who suffer and recover very effectively once they learn what their triggers are.
There are many excellent sources of education to help you understand the internal dialouge that goes on inside your mind that ultimately is the cause of the panic and anxiety attack.
One book in paricualr that many people have found helpful is by Eckhart Tolle - A New Earth. Althought his book deals with many topics, it delvs deeply into how the ego deals with panic and anxiety.
All that being said I do not recommend this as your only source of therapy. However, it certainly would not hurt along with your MD's continued advice and care.

Re: Elevated Liver Enzymes, Night Sweats, VERY VERY TIRED
Hello,
I suffered from many of the symptoms you describe. The elevated enzymes may not be taken seriously at your age but they should be. Not sure where you live but Im in California and finally went to see a biliary specialist at UCSF Medical Center. It not as common to have biliary issues as a young adult but it happens to many many people. Dr James Ostroff was the only doctor who knew what he was looking at. He did an ERCP and found that my common bile duct as well as my pacreatic duct had narrowed (possibly from stones passed, undiagnoised i might add). He opened the ducts and the pain was gone. See a specialist, someone who knows about the biliary. Not all GI doctors really know about biliary problems as a specialty.
Good Luck!
