Herniated Disc and Calf spasms
I had back surgery more than one year ago and my back seems to be doing great. BUT, it is my left leg that is having problems. Because the disc put so much pressure on the sciatica nerve, I had severe nerve damage in my leg. The pain went away from surgery, but I have problems still with slight numbness and a rush of pain to my calf with muscle spasms. Now, my calf muscle tensed up and will not release, making it hard to walk. The doctors say this is just the effects of nerve damage.....but I want to know how to help it! Any suggestions?

Re: Herniated Disc and Calf spasms
Well...I heard about accupuncture but have not yet tried it. I did get a massage and did hot and cold treatments on my calf and it fianally felt better after three days. My calf seems to have spasms when I stretch my leg (somehow causing my calf to tense up and spasm) By the way, I am only 25!

Re: Herniated Disc and Calf spasms
You need to find a good acupuncturist - just like docs there are good ones and bad ones. This is why I recommend the website www.acufinder.com. It is just a great resource for people to get information on the benefits of acupuncture. On this site you will find lots of "rubbish" studies by the Mayo Clinic and National institutes of Health. It is true it doesn't help everyone, but I'd say 80% of the patients I treat find real lasting relief.
Best wishes.

Re: Herniated Disc and Calf spasms
I guess everyone has their own opinions but after a slip and fall and hurting my hip, an orthopedic doctor and a chiropractor couldn't fix in 3 months what an acupuncturist fixed after only TWO sessions. It's whatever works for the individual. You don't know if it will work until you try it.
